Washer won't agitate with clothes in. Will agitate when empty with water

It's a whirlpool top load and 17 years old.
I checked the lid switch, water level switch and they are okay. I replaced the motor coupling. The old one was chewed up and crumbling.
When I put everything back together and turned it on to check if it would spin, I heard a buzzing sound and after a few minutes there was a burning smell.
What should I check to diagnose this problem? would help to have make or model numbers to show age of machine

Hotpoint washer won't spin or agitate and has black soot - is clutch out?

The motor coupling is attached to the shaft of the motor. The "soot" is probably the result of the coupling shredding prior to failing

My roper top load washer model rtw4440vq fills with water but wont wash, spin or drain

see this causes and fix it. God bless you
Motor Coupling If the washer won't spin or agitate the motor coupling might have failed. The motor coupling connects the motor to the washer transmission. It is designed to fail if the washer is overloaded in order to protect both the motor and
Drive Belt If the washer won't spin or agitate, check the drive belt. If the belt is broken or if it isn't tight on the pulleys the washer won't spin or agitate properly.

Drive Motor If the washer won't spin or agitate the drive motor might be defective. This is not common. Check all of the other related parts to this symptom before replacing the motor. If the motor is visibly burned out or physically damaged, replace it.

Stator Assembly If the washer won't spin or agitate the stator assembly might be burned out. The stator is essentially one half of a motor, it interacts with the tub by creating a strong electro-magnet. If the stator burns out the washer won't spin or agitate. Check the stator for continuity. This part is often misdiagnosed.

Door or Lid Latch Assembly If the washer won't spin or agitate the lid switch assembly might be defective. This is a very common problem. The lid switch assembly can fail either mechanically or electrically. Test any electrical switches with an Ohm meter for continuity. The switches should have continuity according to their design.

Door Lock Motor and Switch Assembly If the washer won't spin or agitate the door lock assembly should be checked. The door lock can fail either mechanically or electrically. Test any switches on the door lock with an Ohm meter. The switches should have continuity according to their design.

Motor Control Board If the washer won't spin or agitate the motor control board might be defective. The motor control board provides power to the motor as well as direction and force. If the motor control board is defective the washer may not work at all or function properly.

Frigidaire stackable model FEX831CS0 won't agitate or spin

Hi Kathy.

If the washer does not agitate and spin, then the most common problem is the belt: Washer Drive V-Belt (part 28 in diagram 1)

If you can manually advance to spin but the machine does not agitate, then parts that may need to be replaced are the agitator:
Agitator (part 11 in diag 1) or the agitator drive in the transmission:Agitator Drive (pt.2 diagram 2)

To replace the belt remove the assembly at front top of the washer held by two philips screws and clips. Here description of replacement procedure.

Here Diagram 1

Here Diagram 2

I received information about how to fix my agitator not working on my GE washer. But now I need info on how to get to the agitator. My model WWA8955 is different from any other GE top loading washers...

Oops sorry about that my fault for not searching parts on your model befroe answering. What i wrote about is what ge has made for the past 10 years or so your washer is very old!
to remove that agitator which doesnt use that part i talked about (sorry) so what you do it remove the bolt from top of inner agaitator and pull that agaitaor off. ITs been on thier for 15 or more years and will take some tugging perhaps and if lucky will come out right away after bolt removed. on the inside of the top of that inner agitator will be a coupler that works similar to the one if the vid. i showed you. that coupler needs to be knocked out and replace the spline coupler. Need to check though if center shaft of transmission is stripped before ordering and replacing that spline if the transmission is ground down the transmission would need to be replaced however since its so old the part is no longer available..
The part number for that spilne is WH1X2641
once again i apoligize for thinks it was less that 15 years old

Old top loading Hotpoint washer---the agitator squeaks and eventually works loose & floats up & doesn't agitate--is there a way to easily re-attach it? (Can't find model number, but it is gold,...

Remove the agitator. The splines on the agitator transmission shaft need cleaning. They are at the top of the shaft. Take a sharp pointed knife and carefully clean the grooves of the shaft. If memory serves me, there are 13 grooves. You will also have to replace the agitator spline coupling found inside the top of the agitator.
You will have to cut out the top of the agitator and use a punch to knockout the old coupling.Do not cut out the entire top, only a circle about the size of a quarter.
Put the new coupling on the agitator transmission shaft, put a little liquid dish detergent on the rubber part of the coupling and place the agitator over it and push down hard until it seats.

How do you remove agitator in a hotpoint top loader washing machine

Hi. The agitator is fastened to the agitator shaft and its movement is driven either by splines or a simple clutch assembly, which is removable as well. The splines are usually plastic or rubber nubs on a cylinder that fits over the agitator shaft. If the nubs wear down, the shaft will not turn properly or it will turn weakly. If the agitator is moving in only one direction, the likely cause is the clutch assembly. The clutch has dogs that depress and pop up with each turn. If those dogs are worn, they will not engage properly and the agitator will turn only in one direction.

Various makes and models differ in how the agitator is removed. In some newer models, the agitator just lifts straight up and out. However, in most models you will have to preform a combination of the following steps. First remove the fabric softener dispenser, if any. It should either lift or screw off. Next remove the cap. It may lift off, screw off or failing that, it may need to be pried off.

Beneath the cap some agitators are secured in place by a bolt. Use a socket wrench with an extension to remove that bolt. Some Maytag's may have a screw near to the bottom of the agitator post that must be removed. Now try to lift the agitator straight up, possibly with a little back and forth rocking motion. Use caution when pulling, the agitator may come loose suddenly and hit you in the face or send you flying backward.

If the agitator is particularly stubborn, you can loop some rope under one side of the agitator at the bottom and then up over a broom handle. Now loop it again under the other side of the agitator and back up to the broom. Brace one end of the broom handle against the top of the washer and lift up on the other end. Double check that you have removed anything that may be securing the agitator in place. Do not use too much force or you may damage the washer cabinet, agitator or injure yourself.

At the top of the agitator has a cap get a flat screw driver and pry up and turn. When it comes off there is a nut you have to take off. Then pull up on the agitator..

These older units had an insert in the agitator that would strip out.  Remove your agitator and take to a parts store. They should be able to help you out.
