Question about Carrier 38BRC036 Air Conditioner

1 Answer

John. Heidel@MSSB.com I have 2 carrier units both installed in 2006 and still under warranty, they are a 38brc030 and 38brc042 the evaporator coil in both units have to be replaced and the compressor coil in 38brc030. The repair company says the evaporator coils have had alot of problems and Carrier has modified the size of them. The repair company says the parts will be covered by Carrier but the $2690 flat rate cost of labor to replace them is not. One is seems like a high cost for the labor and second if the evaporators are know to be a problem shouldn't carrier pay for the labor. The repair company says they have to make modifications in the channeling to make the modified evaporators fit the unit which of course is additional costs, but included in the $2690

Hi,
The best thing to do is to call Carriers customer service line or their tech. support number... often times the customer talking to the co. directly will get better results then the dealer talking to them...
The dealer does need to recover thier costs also... they do not make that much money on the initial installation...
It is worth a phone call or two for you to call the factory and tell them how you are going to tell all of your friends NEVER to buy any carrier products because they do not stannd behind them!!!

Our Carrier evaporative coil is broken beyond repair due to copper too thin to hold the refrigerant. Our home and A/C is less than 4 years old and the AC repairman said that if we replace it with another...

If in fact the coil is less than five years old then the parts should be under warranty. Labor only charge. As for the tubing, all coils have very thin walled tubing as to transfer heat more effectively. Aspen coils did have defected coils which were manufactured for a number of brands at about the time you purchased your unit. The manufacture may step up and help if you contact them directly, customer support from Carrier. Estimated cost for labor depending where you live should be between $500 to $800 dollars depending on installation. It could be a little more if it is an attic installation.

I need a new coil on my Carrier unit...how much should that run? What other parts do I typically need to replace when replacing the coil?

It all depends which coil you are speaking of, Evaporator or condenser if you are lucky to find a used match which is highly unlikely. newer units have has their seer rating changed substansually causing both coils to be replced at the same time and by the time that is done a new lineset is required to elliminate cross contamination so its not good news depending on required tonage 3000 to 5000 dollars installed sorry wish it was better news

Looking for evaporator coil cd5axa036017abaa . three years of recharging rather then fixing now the coil is out of warranty and Carrier and service company will not stand behind product.

Hi, if you have a leak in the evaporator coil which this happens a lot and they came out and didn't try to make any attempts in finding and repairing the leak or they found it in the coil and didn't order a new one, this is against the law by E.P.A standards. They must make every attempt in making the repairs if it means replacing the coil, no if, ands, or buts!! Keep your receipts on them charging the system. Now that its out of warranty, I would call them and bring this up about not changing out the coil when the leak was found. I am sure they used dye to locate it.I have found more leaks in the evaporator coils then I care to count, and had to replace the coil. This is something you can't do on your own I must say, as it takes special equipment to do this job. I would call the Enviormental protection agency and tell Carrier you will do this, and report them. I bet they will stand behind it then. You have to get tough with them. I am a air conditioning contractor and know the law. The E. P. A. will get them on the ball trust me. This is bull+)_(*&%!* !! Don't let Carrier walk on you, this coil should have been put in the schedule to be changed out right away, not to continue to charge it to get you through. This is a 3 ton split system. Stay on them, this will be covered if you make the call and stay on them. The E. P. A. are very strict on this as this is why they have stopped us from venting freon into the air, they have very strict guide lines we must follow and Carrier did not follow them on your unit. Please keep me posted, and the best to you.
Sincerely,
Shastalaker7

I have a carrier Puron unit that is six years old. We had to replace the compresor on the third year, and now it is three years later and the second unit has failed.

I have seen this before when there is an obstruction in the evaporator coil metering device. This causes the compressor to struggle moving the Puron. After the Puron has been recovered make sure that they do a complete check of the metering device and check for other obstructions. When they are done checking they must do a proper vacuum to remove any non condensables like water condensation. Finally they should have installed both a liquid and suction filter dryer to reduce any dirt and stuff. The only other options are unlikely, as we will assume that the last company installed the correct (new) compressor and that they did not do a hack job.

On a happier note, the compressor should still be under the 10 year parts warranty!

Carrier evaporator coil

I recently contacted Carrier Corp after our routine annual HVAC check on our residential system indicated that our 4 ton AC unit and 3 ton unit had leaking evaporator coils.
>
They basically told me to shove it in a very curt letter - In other words even though a leaking evaporator coil is a manufacturing defect they will not offer any financial assistance in replacing the failed evaporator coils.
>
I spoke to several HVAC engineers and they indicated Carrier has a high percentage of evaporator coils and compressor failures on residental HVAC systems.
>
The copper wall of the evaporator coil is being drawn thinner than in earlier years and the R22 being acidic slowly eats through the copper tubing.
>
Evaporator coils should not fail according to the HVAC Engineers if properly manufactured.

Carrier Infinity DC motor drive problems

Contact the company that installed the unit. Its new, under warranty, Anything you do could void the warranty. If they do not take care of the problem without charges contact Carrier and tell them what's going on. The company who installed the unit is responsible for making it run correctly. Good luck. kstfas
