Question about Hayward 1.5 Hp Northstar High Performance Pump

1 Answer

I have a NorthStar pump. The motor went out so I have it replaced with a different manufactured motor (WEG). Same HP and even a higher SF factor than the original. The new motor draws 10 amps (rated is 8.85) and gets very hot. Any ideas.

Motor shuts down after running for about half hr,after cooling down about one hr it will restart.

BAD RUN CAPACITOR . HAVE IT CHECKED, OR JUST REPLACE IT. TEST IS BEST, IT COULD BE THE MOTOR IS SHORTED, OR YOU HAVE INSTALLED TO SMALL OF A MOTOR ON YOUR IMPELLER, MOTOR HP + SERVICE FACTOR = TOTAL HP ! A COMMON PROBLEM WITH HAYWARD NORTHSTAR.. SAY THE MOTOR SAYS 1 hp AND HAS A 1.65 SF . thats a 1.65 hp MOTOR .. WELCOME TO MY WORLD.. JAY THE POOL PULP REPAIR GUY IN LONGWOOD FL.. VOTE YES IF I WAS OF HELP.. Just replaced motor overheating and shutting off.

service factor must match old motor ! motor must match impeller hp rating ! .. get the numbers off the impeller and search it on the web.. bet your motor is too small.. the easy fix ? buy the right impeller for your motor.. the things you need when buying a impeller are as fallows.. your motors hp and SF .. thats the service factor ! if the voltage is 120 v the motor set on 240 it will jump back and forth between start and run.. it will make a click ..click ..click noise .USE A VOLT METER. I smell a northstar a real pain of a pump.. REMEMBER TO BUY AMERICAN PRODUCTS (PLEASE) AND SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL POOL PUMP REPAIR GUY.. Pump gets very hot when it runs

WARNING when replacing a motor on a northstar you must match the hp and service factor.. say its a 1.1/2 hp motor and the service factor 1.47 you will need a 2hp with a 1.15 service factor to replace that original motor .if you replace it with a 1 1/5 motor it WILL BURN UP THE MOTOR !!. welcome to the hayward northstar .
only the 2 speed motors have a start switch the CAPACITOR would be my first check it may be a 30 or a 35uf at 370 cap LOOK IN YOUR AREA FOR YOUR LOCAL POOL PUMP MOTOR REPAIR GUY WITH FREE TESTING USE YOUR ZIP CODE IN YOUR SEARCH

POOL PUMP MOTOR MAKES HUMMING NOISE BUT WILL NOT START where can I get a diagram of the motor if I need to take it apart to fix, what could the problem be?

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

It could be the pump is bound up but it is more likely the motor is failing. It may be a small part such as the capacitor or the starting switch, but could also be more severe such as the winding itself. You will also want to examine the shaft where it passes thru the pump and motor and look for signs of rust from a pump seal leak.

If you are not familiar with testing these parts your best bet would be a local electric motor repair shop to see if the motor can be repaired or if it would need to be replaced. They should also be able to ensure there is no pump damage. Otherwise please reply with specific questions about what you find for more direction.

If this answer does not fix your problem, please comment with additional details prior to rating the answer. Positive feedback is appreciated once your problem is solved!

Northstar 1.5 hp pump motor is always hot and shuts off for ten minutes aned comes back on. The voltage and amperage is good. What's the problem

It has an internal thermal overload protection device that is turning it off. Once it cools enough it will automatically turn back on as long as whatever switch or timer you have controlling the pump is in the on position. If you are certain it is not due to a voltage or load condition then it would seem the only other problem is mechanical.

In any case try a local electric motor repair shop.

What does SF mean on pool and spa pumps?

SF stands for Service Factor. It has to do with how much overload your motor can handle without damage. Here is some information about it:

http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/service-factor-d_735.html

You should not be feeling any "trickle" of electricity. You are correct...it is NOT SAFE! I would definitely have another qualified electrician check your wiring out.

Thanks for using Fixya.
