Question about Raymarine St 4000 Wheel Drive E12093

Open Question

I have a Raymarine Autohelm ST4000 wheel drive autopilot on my Catalina 27. Last night, it was working fine until I tried to disengage the locking lever to steer manually. The lever felt "different". It didn't snap back as it usually does. The drive unit did not disengage. The head was on "Standby" mode. I tried to work the clutch lever a couple of times but no luck. In an attempt not to strip the gears, I pulled the steering wheel off and used my emergency tiller. I'm trying to figure out how to disassemble the wheel drive to see if I can fix the clutch lever. Please help!

St4000 pops into standby

Hi
This is almost always caused by a dirty connection at the standby contact. If you're handy with electronic repairs, take the control apart and clean the circuit board for the contacts with silicone spray (safe for plastics) and a Q-tip and reassemble. Works 99 44/100% of the time.

Hope this helps.

My st4000 mkII shuts off from auto mode whhen i engage the clutch lever and the wheel turns for a second. the screen goes blank and just displays "st4000" . voltage is fine and all wires are connected....

CHECK THE POWER SUPPLY WIRING ,If it worked before ,could be corrosion or lose wire connection,or terminal bad crimped,or terminal loose inserted.
If it is new installation ,power wires could be undersized,or battery discharged .
Normally autopilot shuts off from auto and restarts when power supply voltage drops under the reset voltage ,when the wheel turns ,the motor current increase and the power voltage drops when the power supply wires are not OK.
