Question about 2wire (1000-400108-001) Router

Open Question

I had at&t dsl service using a 2wire, 2701HG-B wireless router/modem. I moved to another state where at&t dsl service is not available and currently have cable internet (Cox Communications in Phoenix, AZ)through a motorola sb5101n Surfboard cable modem. I have a 4-port linksys router (no wirelss) and would like to use the at&t wirless modem to provide wireless internet to my iphones/ipads/PS3. I can get the wireless to work for a short period (the ethernet and wireless lights are flashing green and the dsl light is flashing red and the internet light is not lit, however, I do have wireless internet to my iphones/ipads for a short period of time) maybe 10 min. or less. When I'm on the computer after everything is up and running, suddenly I lose my internet connection and the browser goes to at&t 2wire setup page. I can unplug the 2wire modem and the internet is useable again. I want to use the at$t 2wire modem to provide wireless internet service only. Is there a method to my madness (trying to save money here)? I was using the same 2wire wireless modem to stream media from my computer to a PS3 and it worked flawlessly. 2wire modem/router has dsl phone line port and 4 ports for ethernet. Cable modem has only one ethernet port and goes to linksys 4port router, then from linksys router to pc. Both at$t and 2wire technicians are no help. They tell me to call the other one. Where could I get the instructions if this is possible? Thank you, Doug H.

SOURCE: CAN A 2WIRE DSL ROUTER WORK WITH A CABLE INTERNET CONEECTION

The 2wire dsl modem/router cannot be use with a another cable modem , since this 2wire device is also a modem/router and its made for the DSL conenction that's why it wont work with Cox cable, the best thing that you can do is to ask Cox to give a wireless modem/router like this 2wire so you can still use the wireless connection of your computer..

Hope that helps..........

SOURCE: Have SBCglobal with 2wire but want N wireless capability

Follow the dots -

2 wire DSL wire to back of DSL modem.

Ethernet cable out of DSL modem, to current router (if you have one).

Ethernet cable out of current router (if you have one) to new Wireless N router.

If you currently have a wireless G router, keep it, or, use the new Wireless G/N router alone. You will need to set up all security settings again if you remove your current router, and if the new router is N only, you will need to make sure all your wireless connecting computers have wireless N cards in them.

I have an at&t 2wire 2701hg-b but i dont have at&t internet i have charter and i am not able to figure out how to get my internet to work with this router please help

att 2 wire is a Adsl Modem (Requires a telephone line jack to get the signals) but charter communication is a cable internet service (not DSL) , Requires a TV cable service for internet .
These two jacks differs and there working differs ..
Means : Att works with the username and password type of authentication but charter requires the MAC address of modem for authentication .
Therefore for a cable internet 2wire 2701hg-b modem cant be used . But yes in case charters has username and password authentication and works with the telephone jack in house then its possible to use the same modem.

Hi i have a 2wire gateway 2701HG-B modem I used for AT&T DSL internet. I moved to a location where I cant get AT&T. Is it possible to use this modem with centurylink for internet?

Hello, if centurylink is a DSL service, than you can use it for internet. It appears that Centurylink is a DSL service depending upon which service you get from them. In that case, you can use it for their service.

Thanks for using FixYa!

I want use my 2wire (2701HG-B) Wireless Router without the dsl line

Modem and routers are considered only as access point you computer may be able to connect to your router but if you dont have a DSL line you will not be able to go on line... if you dont want a DSL line there are service that concentrates on wireless alone... in this DSL line are not required nor router but may provide you a USB wireless adapter that has their wireless service then again try calling an Internet Service provider for this options...
thanks... Roger

The network appliance you're asking about is a modem with a wireless router built in. Basically, it's an all-in-one device. It will replace your already existing modem. It is a wise upgrade for any AT&T DSL connection.

2wire 2701HG-S Embarq to AT&T

that is typically a bad username in the modem, you will have to put there temp user name in for registration for the DSL. and after that you can put the username into the modem that you created during the registration process. Should be taken care of.

Can I use AT&T 2WIRE 2701HG-B DSL to ant ISP?

look if u wish to go for verizon service,,they will provide u with a wireless modem as well,,but if u tell them that u hav a modem then they might configure this modem only,,both ATT and verizon are DSL service providers with PPPoE connections.the only thing u need is the username and passwrd from verizon which u have to setup on the first page of the 2wire setup page,,both the connections are dhcp based.so no other connection settings change required. But when u talk with verizon make sure u tell them of the 2wire modem

Moreover verizon has wireless broadband service which is actually a express card tat u have to put into your computer and u can go online anywhere u go within ur country{it works like a mobile phone}

best of luck,,keep me posted

Can I use 2WIRE 2701HG-B router in COX internet connection

No. A router has 2 main interface types WAN (for the internet connection side, and LAN (for the home network side) the 'LAN' side often has up to 4 ports and wireless connectivity for the home network.

The most common routers available at electronics retail use a CAT-5 connection for the WAN ports and the LAN ports. Your DSL modem/router uses a phone line input for it's WAN port, which uses a signal type that is incompatible with the cable modem output.

If COX doesn't offer a router with the cable modem package, you can go and purchase and common brand of home networking router, and attach it to the output of the cable modem.
