The click of death - the hard disk inside has suffered a terminal mechanical fault. Sorry, nothing can be done to fix it, it's dead, just junk it and buy a new one.

I have a toshiba 500gb external hard drive and suddenly it has been making a clicking noise and not working as far as reading how can i fix this fast?

You can't. When you hear the clicking noise every time it attempts to read, the sound you hear are the read/write heads striking against the edge of the enclosure. The drive has most likely failed. The only thing you can try is to open up the case and remove the drive and directly connect to your desktop computer. Another thing that sometimes works is to wrap the drive in plastic and place in the freezer for an hour, then connect it. IF it starts working, quickly save what data you can off of it because it will fail again when it warms up. I don't think that usually works with head failure, but give it a try.

My simpletech drive is showing on my iMac but I am unable to write any files to it. It says I can only "read" but it does not alow me to change the access.

These things come formatted for PCs--you have to go into Utilities on your mac (in hard drive click on Applications, Utilities folder, then Disk Utility, then click on the simpletech (that has the gb next to it), click on the drop down to change the format (MS-DOS if you want to read on both PCs and MAC, but MAC-OS for just Macs) re-name it on the drop down below that, then click on erase and then it's re-formatted.

The drive is not recognized by Windows or Mac

You should give Test Disk a try. It's a little complicated at first but if you read the tutorial it's easy.

Drive won't boot

Thry this: turn your computer OFF. Gently unplug and replace the data cable connection to the computer several times. Do the same to the drive end of the cable. Leave one end unplugged. Turn on the computer and when the Mac os is set up and waiting for you, plug the drive in and see if the computer recognizes and reads the drive. The problem is usually corrosion on the contacts that prevent proper contact.

LaCie 500GB external will not show up on mac desktop. Blue light on, whirrs as if working but no icon on desktop (not mounted)

Did you format the drive using Disk Utility? Open "disk utility" from the dock icon or applications/utilities folder. Click the drive name on the left side of the disk utility window. click the "partition" tab in the window, next click the "options" tab and select GUID Partition scheme, or any Mac compatible scheme, read each explanation of the schemes. Name and resize your partitions, click apply. This is how it works running Leopard, not positive if the same applies to Tiger. I hope this helps you

Blue light clicking noise

This is known as the "click of death" among hard drives. Your external is merely a normal hard drive in an enclosure, and just as the hard drive in your computer can crash, so an the one in the enclosure, especially since it they tend to be transported a lot more. The sound you hear is the head seeking rapidly back and forth across the platters, and it isn't seeing anything.
I read the manual, and it doesn't say anything about a blue light. If the information is vitally important, there are companies that do data recovery that you can find, but it will run you upwards of $300. If it's not that important to you, buy a new hard drive and treat it nicely.
