It is possible that the trigger switch is not giving the right signal to the main processor controller. Remove battery and reset after some time , There are two possibilites for the blurring and one could be a faulty CCD. If the camera was exposed to direct sunlight this could be a reason, if so the damage can be permanent. But if the blinding picture is because of the flash, you will need to open menu and correct the "red eye effect". Also set the picture setting to normal. When you try to press the shutter,a short press is needed for adjusting the auto focus to the light and will take a bit of time if the menu is set to Auto. So just press to adjust and then once you find the picture is adjusted press fully to click.
I hope my advice helps, please comment. Good day

HOW TO TURN ON FLASH

Flash should pop up automatically when you operate camera in easy mode (green square on dial selector) in low light conditions. If using in manual modes press the button on the left side of the lens mount. To fire the flash without taking a picture press the button used to zoom out when viewing pictures.
If your flash does not work at all then there is probably a fault with the charging circuit or firing circuit.

My Rebel XS is VERY slow after about 100 shots

Could be a card problem. How large is the card? Is it at least a class 4? Is it already full of pictures that need to be downloaded to make room? Has it ever been formatted in the camera?(This will erase it so download any pics first)

The display does not come on, there is a "busy" sign flashing

Sounds like the problem Canon had to fix for me with my S2 IS which did the same thing. My camera shot blank pics. It turned out to be a stuck shutter. The camera makes all the usual noises, but the shutter is stuck closed.

Flash pre-firing like mad?

It is your camera using the flash to assist in focusing, if it bothers you you can change it in your menus, I have a XTi so yours will differ slightly.
Switch your camera to "P" mode.
Press "Menu" button.
Go to setup menu 3
scroll down to "Custom Functions (C Fn.)"
Press "set".
press to the right until you find "AF - assist beam"
Press "set".
And press up or down.
Set to "Does not emit"
press "set"
Press "menu" button twice.
