If there is no nutton on the TV to do so then you have to have the remote for it. You can try a universal remote but, usually functions like that don't work. If you use a tv dish or cable box you could program the cable or dish remote to control your tv. Look up the codes online

I came across this looking for a similar solution for my Samsung TV, and I found the solution on ehow.com. Apparently after you program the remote for your TV you have to hold mute and select again until it flashes twice then put in 960 to make the remote control TV input too. Note you're remote should be in TV mode while you do this. It seems silly that the DirectTV guy wouldn't do this when programming the remote.
