Before replacing the alternator or belt I would take a look at the belt tensioner. Sounds like the belt is loose, and that would be a problem with the tensioner.

How do I change the serpantine belt on my dodge magnum (2007)

you need to take the tension off the belt by pressing on the automatic tensioner pulley. once the tension is off the belt can be removed. the new one goes on in reverse. The new one might seem very tight. Wrap the belt around the hardest pulley(s) first

Serpantin belt replacement? I need a manual!!!

You need a 14mm socket on a extended breaker bar,
place on automatic tensioner center pulley bolt which is the dumpy pulley located above the alternator.
Move the nut to tighten which will move spring loaded tensioner to low side which will allow you to slip belt off.....installlation is the reverse

Power steering stopped working and the battery light came on but it still runs,

It is a safe bet the serpantine belt that drives the power steering and alternator has snapped, open the hood and check, there should be a belt about an inch wide or so running round the pulleys, if you can see a bunch of polished rings across the pulleys then the belts gone, you need a special tool or a decent toolbox to fit a new one, it often also runs the water pump so dont drive far.

Adjust alternator belt

you shouldent need to remove anything to replace or tighten your serpantine belt there is two pullys without grooves the one on the left should be the tensioner if you turn the bolt clockwise it looses the belt off so you can pull it off if done right you can take the belt and pull it around the fan then reverse to put a new one back on
