CD/DVD thinks there's no disk in.

Hi,

this pc is my first and is about 10 months old. it constantly thinks i have a mass storage device in (though I don't) and now the DVD/CD can't recognize any type of disk i insert. It was fine till i had my SD card in and cancelled the photo upload so I think it's something I've done.

any advice appreciated

Does a message pop up on the screen when you start your computer that mentions the mass storage device?

A mass storage device could be an external hard drive, flash drive, or sd card.

While your computer is running press and hold: ctrl alt then hit delete. When you do this the task manager window will appear. Click on applications and see if there is anything listed regarding a mass storage device. If there is select the task and click 'end task'.

If not, click the icon at the bottom right side of your screen that looks like a little memory stick with a green arrow pointing to the left. Double click on that, click mass storage device, then see what is listed. If there is a specific device listed select it and click stop.

When you cancelled your upload, your computer may have placed the task in a que to finish at a later time.

- mass storage device in = SD card.

- The DVD/CD can't recognize any type of disk inserted: Replace the CD-DVD unit, it is with problem.

Not very helpful info! I would try tapping f12 on booting up which takes you into the Dell Diagnostics mode. Then come back here.

Need Motherboard manual (including how to gain access to BIOS)

for the manufacturer's name and the model number you will have to physically open the case and examine the mother board. With that information you can visit the manufacturer's site for documentation

Toshiba A305-6825 laptop prolem (no visible CD/DVD Rom drive). In Device Manager: HL-DT-ST dvdram gsa-t40F ATA device error. Media test failure. There appears to be CD/DVD combo drive firmware...

You seem to be onto things (though your problem classification was generic instead of for your Toshiba model A305.) Install all the updated drivers for your laptop from the laptop's support site (Toshiba's, that is) so you can use your drive. Drives fail sometimes, and you could try sticking an old movie or something in there instead of nothing, but it is likely it is just the missing driver.

Master hard disk s,m,a.r.t.status bad, backup and replace

A failure message from the SMART system of this nature indicates that a catastrophic hard drive failure could be imminent. Without delay, back up ANY data you want to keep. This error isn't going to go away, and is being reported by the drive controller.

Whilever you can access the drive, move any data you want onto another media (such as DVD or external USB hard drive) because chances are it's not going to work much longer. You need to look at buying a new hard drive as soon as you possibly can, and migrating the data to it.

Files and Settings Transfer Wizard will be able to backup your data to another media.
