Question about IBM ThinkPad R40 2722 Notebook

1 Answer

IBM R40 Problems AC adaptor plug needs to be adjusted (wiggled, coached on the female connector) minutely to have panel (green) lights illuminate. No battery, Windows gets on screen, password entered, then click, a low whistle and screen dead. Battery installed, orange battery light solid. Able to start up, sometimes will run for 1 hour. Other times 10 minutes, with the low battery sound and blinking orange and shut off. Checked AC adaptor, 16 volts (at specs). Battery shows 12 ?13 volts-should be enough to make battery light green. Hard drive shows 70% spare room and all software running fine..

I recommend bringing this laptop into Best Buy for repair. This has several hardware related issues from what you've described. If the repair quote is any more then $200 (which i anticipate it will be) I would consider investing in a new laptop and not throw good money after bad.

Thanks

Charger seems to have both red and green lites flashing at the same time no sequence and both batteries connected read 4.0 VDC, are these chargers repariable or throw aways

Your manual is here. The section on charging states, that green blinking means your battery is fully charged but blinking red means that your charger is faulty. I would say repairable.

1. Plug the female connector of the AC power cord (supplied) to the AC receptacle on the charger and plug in the male connector on the AC power cord into the wall outlet.

2. The On/Off LED indicator is blinking RED, this is abnormal. Unplug AC power cord from the on-board battery charger and wall outlet. Charger may need to be replaced. Contact an Invacare dealer or qualified technician.

3. When the On/Off LED indicator light is Off, charger is Off.

4. When the Charge LED indicator light is YELLOW, the batteries are charging.

5. When the Charge LED indicator light is solid GREEN, the batteries are fully charged (as their condition will allow).

6. When charging is complete, unplug the male connector of the AC power cord from the wall outlet and then unplug the female connector of the AC power cord from the AC receptacle on the charger.

I have an acer aspire 5100 and here recently the

Could be a bad battery and/or charger/AC Adaptor/DC Connector. Try to isolate the problem by removing the battery and then plugging the laptop charger in and starting the pc up. It should boot on the AC adapter alone. If it won't boot on the AC adaptor or it flickers and flashes while on the AC adaptor, I would first suspect the AC adaptor or the DC connector on the laptop (try wiggling the power plug at the PC to try and check the connector). If it behaves while on the AC adaptor without the battery present, I would suspect the battery. Either way, you may have to replace something.

I have a r40 ibm laptop problem is date & time error i replaced cmos battery update bios but still problem now

Assuming that you used the correct battery go ahead and unplug and replug the cmos batter back into its connector.

Go into the BIOS and set the date and time properly. Then unplug the battery and save the changes and exit.

See if the message comes back, if it doesn't then your good to go. If the message still comes back then the motheroard isn't keeping memeory at all.

Go ahead and shut off the machine for about 15 minutes. Then only plug the ac adapter up and hopefully the message stays away. If it does then that means the battery is good and your motherboard is good as well.

if you leave it off and then turn the laptop on and that error message comes back then you need to change out the motherboard.

Ac power doesnt work only in battery mode, adaptor output is ok

sounds like the power connector (where you plug into pc) is going bad. try twisting / wiggling connector. pause for a few seconds between twists to give circuitry chance to reconize power input. sometimes there is a green led that will light up when power adaptor is inserted. you can use that as a reference.

I have no power with adapter no lights to indicate charging. laptop wont turn on

check and see if the jack where you plug the ac adapter into the laptop feels loose at all or if adjusting it slightly makes the lights flash. if you you have a loose dc jack and will need to see about getting it repaired.

IBM ThinkPad R40 No PowerUp

If the the ram is the problem of your system, there should be a power on light on the system. indicating that some of the component of the system is not working correctly. But since you mentioned there is no light, it is the possibility that the problem is the motherboard itself.

Try turning on the system without the AC adaptor. If it doesn't work on battery, then try pressing and holding the power key (after removing the battery) for 30 seconds.
Now attach the AC adaptor and try to power on.
If it doesn't work, it sounds like either a motherboard issue or an AC adaptor issue (possibly there isn't enough voltage being supplied) but it's an odd problem. I hope I helped.
Stay spicy, and happy lappying! :)

IBM Thinkpad R40 power problem

This sounds like a power cord or connector problem.
these cords offten break at the back of the connector to the lap top. When you hold it just right it will work. Otherwise it acts up.
If the battery were in good shap it would smooth out the issue but....
Replacment power cord/transfomers are reasonable on e-bay many come out of china and are inexpensive. also consider an all in one type that will be upgradeable for your nest notebook and work in the car or airplane as well as the house. I like Igo brand and Targus but they are a personal preferance.

Laptop shutting off

This problem has happened to me on several occasions. I found that the connector that you plug your power supply into on the motherboard gets loose. Not making a good connection and like you said needs to be re soldered. Before attempting this, stick a small screwdriver in there and see if it's loose. If it is, then EVERYTHING needs to come off to get to it. Not a quick project. I suggest you take pictures along the way just in case. Good luck!
