Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

We bought a 32' akai lcd hd tv at Sams in NC and CA. We have had problems with both. We took the one back at Sams Club/California. I am in NC now and the one we bought for our place here just stopped working. It shut off and will not reset and turn back on. Have there been recalls on this tv?

Yeah, we have had a few similar problems with not only this model, but most other projection TV's as well.

Try these steps:

1. There is a simple trick...just warm the back of the TV with a hair dryer for 5-7 mins after you have unplugged the TV. Look for the little areas of holes in the back panel of TV. Use these as your guide at where to use hairdryer., but don't hold the dryer too close(say 5-6inches away). (Make sure the dryer is on High heat). If the TV doesn't turn on after you have heated it up (like it tries to come on but then turns off) you need to unplug the TV again, this resets it. And repeat those steps till it works. Reseting the TV after it fails to turn on is the key. Also, just leave the TV on. Don't turn in off. Since it is LCD, it doesn't take much power...only a few bucks extra a month for your utility bill.

2. You can also try this..if you unplug the TV, and hold in the power button while plugging it back in, this will reset the TV, and sometimes it comes on.

3. If you want to go in for a long term solution, you can easily replace the whole power board (should be about $20 or so), or just change the faulty capacitors. You can make out which are faulty, because their caps will be swollen on top. Here's a pic
We bought a 32' akai - 017809a.jpg
Check the specifications of the faulty capacitors, and get the replacements from your local electronics shop. If you are comfortable with this, you can use a pair of needle nose pliers to G-E-N-T-L-Y pull out the defunct capacitors. Once that is done, solder in the new capacitors carefully. If are unsure how to do this, try to get a friend who knows how to do this kinda stuff do it for you.

PS. The capacitors are usually 680 - 1000 micro farad and 35V. however, if you dont find 35V, you could use a 50V as well. They will be slightly larger, but you should be able to get them to fit in.
You can buy the capacitors online from HERE or HERE if you wish..They cost $0.068 - $0.85 each, depending upon the model.

Hope that helps...Should you have any further questions, please feel free to post them here.

P.S. Before you assign a rating, please make sure that the issue is resolved or you are satisfied. If not, please post back as to what you did, and/or any other questions you may have, and I will try to assist you as best I can. The Samsung LN40B540P8F I would rate a 9. Only God is 10.

All the DLP sets, you can throw out

All the Older Projection sets you can throw out

I would take the rest for scrap parts.

I hope this is helpful.

Sams club warranty problem

The bulbs aren't normally covered after the first year. Some extended warranty companies used to cover the bulbs after that, but now since the economy is bad... a lot of companies are trying to save money by not covering the lamps anymore. And the ones that did are handing the warranties over to other companies. You probably will just have to buy one yourself or you will just be chasing your tail.

I have a 47 inch hdtv projection tv I really like the tv it has great color but it is turning on and off by its self. I bnought it new from sams club in the box aug 12 2005. Can you advise as to what could...

Try replacing the lamp if it uses one it should be blinkinkg a error, but maybe lamp just startig to fail I would replace it anyway because it will go bad in the future. Normal lamp time is about 5,000 -7,000 HRS. Also not sure if your TV is Tube type,LCD or Plazma. If it is a tube type TV there won't be a lamp. Then you have a shutdown problem. Hope this helps, Mike C.E.T.

I just had that problem. Check the terminal board that is on the left if you open the back of the TV. There is a thing in there with the number aa93-something. If you check under that board there should be some solders that have come loose. I just fixed this problem last night!!

I BOUGHT A LC42D43U TV AT SAMS CLUB ON BLACK FRI AFTER CHRISTMAS....NOW THE LEFT SIDE OF THE SRREEN IN WHITE AND ONLY THE RIGHT HALF HAS A PICTURE...WHAT DO I NEED TO DO....THANK YOU CHUCK HAIMAN ...

The lc42d43u has a control board that supplies the picture to four quadrants of the lcd panel, it sounds like either half of that control board is bad or you have a bad panel. Sharp does not supply panels but will replace the control board, If the panel is bad they will usually replace the tv or make some other concession. since you bought it at christmas it should be under the 1 yr manufactures warranty. I would suggest calling sharp and finding your nearest authorized service center. Thanks, hope this helped.

Akaia PTH5498

The STKs are common and if you have an experienced electronics tech around they can replace them for much less money but the tech must have advanced soldering and IC exchange experience.

The STK ics, two of them, can be purchased on line for around $20 to $40 each.

http://www.partstore.com/GetModel.aspx?MfgName=Toshiba&BrandName=Toshiba&ModelNu...

Partstore has two models available - one for around $40 and another for around $55.

The part number is STK392-110 and if you google you can find them for as little as $6/each but I don't recommend the cheap ones as they are not reliable.

It takes a good tech around 3 or 3 hours to take the old ones out and solder in the new ones. Also, it is likely one or two resistors are burnt and will need replacing as well.

Hear say has it that Toshiba who made alot of the internal parts for this model can offer more help than Akai.
As for the other problems... first Id try leaving the TV unplugged for a day or so. This is a great TV, picked mine up for 400 from my boss who baught it a few years back for 1400 from Sams Club. If I hear a solution I'll be sure to come back here and post it.
