My player does the same thing, but if I unplug it for 15 or 20 minutes it works......for all of 10 minutes then it freezes. Could this be a thermal problem?

my dvd player keep saying unknown disc

  • justmebyron Aug 30, 2008

I've had the same problem as well; while watching a DVD it suddenly freezes up, then when I stop it and push Play again, it won't load. I eventually get either a "No Disc" or "Unknown Disc" in the upper lefthand screen. I try 5 other DVDs, and all of them get the same remark. And on the chance I do get the DVD player to start again, it only plays for 20 seconds, then freezes up again, and the whole thing happens all over again.

Try picking up the dvd player from the back, or side and resting it on it's side or front. It works for me 90% of the time when getting the no disc or unreadable message. Especially if it's like 3/4 of the way through a disc and starts stopping and skipping

Hey jgconstable,

Before seeking repair assistance, there are a couple of options that you may wish to try out at home.

First, you may want to try cleaning any affected discs if you are only encountering this problem with a select few titles. Any kind of contaminant (dirt or lint) can often cause optical devices to not recognize a media title that is inserted. I would suggest checking each disc that is affected for any signs of scratches, and try cleaning them with a soft, lint-free (typically microfiber) cloth. Remember to use gentle, outward strokes from the center of the disc towards the outer edge.

Second, you may want to try cleaning the lens of the player itself. Many retailers (including your local Best Buy™ store) often sell commercial cleaning kits that are designed to be inserted directly into the player, in place of a normal CD or DVD.

If cleaning doesn't resolve the problem, you may wish to attempt resetting the player. Many DVD players will have either a physical reset button located someplace on the exterior casing, or be capable of a "soft reset." A soft reset is typically done by pressing and holding the power button for five to ten seconds, but please keep in mind that your owner's manual would have the most detailed information on how to reset the player to the original factory settings.

Should the player continue you malfunction, remember that you can always bring your DVD player into your local Best Buy™ store for service and repairs.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron

My 2 1/2 year old LG dvd/vcr recorder will play some dvds but will not play others. It says unknown disc. I was told to try a lens cleaner; I bought one and the lens cleaner says unknown disc as well. ...

Hi,

Your DVD /VCR says unknown disc because the
dvd which you have inserted is not of the supported format by player.

If you insert unsupported formats only it will say as unknown disc. This is not related with disc cleaners.

Please insert the supported formats and it will play the disc.

Thanx

Insignia blu-ray player only plays music cd's. Ejects BD's.

Try to clean the player using a bluray cleaning kit. Dont use the dvd cleaning kit as a few can cause problems. Look at packages and see if they can be used on blu-ray players.

If this does not fix the player call Insignia immediately as the laser can be broke and will be expensive to fix. These players have a one year warrante so you should be covered

DVD plays as a split screen on my television

On the Insignia remote control:

- press power on
- Open disk tray
- click set up button
- click the arrow button pointing left
- press enter
- click the arrow button pointing up
- press enter
- press enter again

I got this off of a website yesterday evening and figured I'd give it a try. Well, it worked. The screen went back to it's original state and the PSAN error (in the middle of the screen) disappeared.

The laser has become damaged/worn-out. There is no fix for it as replacement parts are not made for it.
