According to Brother.:
toner cartridge may be damaged or the corona wire is dirty.
You can try the following.
Print 20 pages in a row This should sometimes help the problem .
If this does not work Follow this LINK for step by step instruction how to clean the inside of the printer completely.
If the cleaning did not work it is deffenitely your cartridge.

Good luck.

Did you have the vertical line before replacing the drum or only since you've replaced the drum.

If it was there before, the line might be on the fuser.

If it just started then you might have a defective drum, did you use a new or refurbished drum? Is it a brother brand drum or a third party drum?

A good test to run is a half print test. That is when you print a page, a report of something, then open the printer door when you think the paper is halfway through the printer. Pull the page out and look for the vertical line, it it's there then you have a drum/toner/printhead problem. If the line is not present then the fuser is producing your defect and you should have the fuser cleaned and/or replaced. Sometime it takes a few tries to get the timing right to have the page in the right position when you open the door.

I will do some further research on your problem and get back to you in a bit.

You are going to want to clean the Corona wire. On the drum then is a Corona wire cleaner that slides back and forth. Run it the full length of the drum a few time then make sure it is at it's home position at the triangle.

If that doesn't help then like I said above, you either have a bad drum, toner cartridge, or fuser.

Did you save the old drum? Put it back in and see if the line goes away.

Vertical lines are generally caused by a clogged toner cartridge. Try removing the cartridge and shaking it from side-to-side to dislodge the clog. If that doesn't work, replace the toner.

My HL2040 printer is printing black vertical lines along the right-hand side of the page, about 3" or so. A month ago I took it apart and cleaned the roller. Still doing it.

If the lines go all the way down the page, check the position of the corona wire cleaner tab (blue or green) at the top front of the drum unit. if not parked fully to one side it will create a solid black lines where it blocks the laser. Otherwise look for some other foreign object (or torn paper piece) that may be blocking the laser from the drum. If the lines are thin and shark, check for scratches on the drum (not repairable without replacing drum). If the lines are uneven thickness but in a pattern that repeats down the page every few inches, then the film on the drum is probably worn or wearing away and the drum needs to be replaced.

Brother MFC 7440 - white line running vertically through printed page.

If its a laser printer you might have a line on the drum. Lift the flap on the toner cartridge and spin it to see if you have anything on it. Also the drum. When you find the line take a soft brush or lint free glove and lightly remove it Your problem should be solved. If a inkjet printer you need to clean print heads. To do this go to your printer model in control panel and right click you will see in the list the utility. Some times in properties. Choose to clean heads You might have to do it a few times.

MFC-9440 CN Laser Printer is producing vertical color line streak

Colored vertical streaks - looks like a transfer belt problem, and it's not user fixable. You may need a new belt unit - you can find it for around US$ 80-120, but you may want to have a technician inspect the unit first, since it could arguably be the drum instead, and you don't want to fork around US$ 100 and replace the wrong part.
You can try showing a printer sample at a print shop; by looking at the streaks it is possible to diagnose drum, fuser or belt problems.
Here you find a much more detailed page, for another printer model, but the issues are mainly the same for most color printers:

Laser printer horizontal streaks go away after a few pages

The operating principles behind laser printers are fairly simple. In fact, Brother machines more closely resemble large copiers than conventional laser printers, this is why they are so reliable.

There are a couple of things to look at:

On the drum unit: is the imaging drum worn or scratched? When did you last clean the corona wire?

If the drum is scratched or otherwise with defect it should be replaced. If the corona wire is dirty it can fail to properly charge the drum and lead to print defects.

On the toner cartridge: Does the toner roller have any noticeable lines or banding in the toner?

Behind the toner roller is a "Doctor Blade" that ensures an even and consistent coating of toner. If there are lines in it they can produce print defects as well. Lines would be likely caused by toner accumulation on that blade. If there are lines, are you are careful, you may be able to clean the blade by gently and slowly scrubbing the non adhesive end of a post-it note between the toner roller and the doctor blade where the lines are.

How do you find page count on hl2040

Press the blue "Go" button 3 times (within two seconds). The unit will print a "Print Settings" page with everything from serial number to a replacement toner count. Page count is first item, left column, below the drum life bar graph.

Brother MFC 7220 prints vertical line from top to

The photosensitive drum needs to be cleaned or replaced. If after cleaning it the vertical line continues, the printer may need maintenance.

Vertical lines when it prints, etc.

Vertical print problems are going to mean a drum replacement on that model. You can try to pull out the drum unit and carefully, with a lint free cloth, try spinning the drum and cleaning it off, but more than likely the coating on the drum has worn off where the vertical defect is. New part # dr-250 for that machine model..

Printing problem

Vertical line is probably scratch in Toner/image drum or one of the erase LED bar lamps is out. Start by replacing the Drum and see if it is better. LED erase lamp assy is more expensive so I hope for you that it is the drum.

Saw this scratched tomer drum on a ton of HP I serviced while in Europe

Cheers!
