Hi Friend,
It depends that whether your router is wireless or wired.
If it is a wireless router then there is no need to connect the laptop with the cable, you can use the laptop wirelessly
If it is a wired router and as you said that the Desktop is already connected to the router with the cable so in that case you have to get another ethernet cable and can connect it from the router to your laptop
1. you will have to designate the laptop or allow it to connect by entering it into the 3com router. 2. try connecting to the router via ethernet cord (that is connecting with a physical straight through cord) that came with the router. If connected with this then you will have to go into the router via the IP set 192.168..0.1 depending on the router ip for loging in. 2. Go to the "wireless setup" and enter your MAC address for the laptop in the permissions list in the router. Instructions on how to do this is at the manufacturers site. Step by step. 3. Do the following step if instructions not found. 1.Log into router 2. Verify wireless router name( on the computer) >>> ( on/off) 3.Note router name you are connecting to. 4.. Check the laptop do ipconfig /all to see current IP adresses. 5. Set the laptop up in the router by WEP KEY or MAC address. 6.Note router name you are connecting to. 7. Move the laptop about 20ft away and try to log on to the internet. This is for all routers to set up wirelessly.
2 wireless laptops are connecting. that means the router must be working properly. Only 1 laptop is not connecting. Try to change the wireless channel on the router. For this you will need to open the set up page of the router. Is there any computer connected to the router ? If not then you will need to connect the computer to the router and open the set up page. Under wireless settings try to change the wireless channel on the router and see if that works.
Connect your internet connection to the port on the router
then connect your laptop and desktop to the router.
if you have a user name and password enter these in the router settings
everything should work
If your laptop has a wireless capability you should be able to connect to the wireless network of your router, just view the available wireless network select the wireless name of your router and connected to it if it already say connected try to disconnect the ethernet cable from your laptop and access the internet wirelessly..........
You may need to temporarily wire the laptop to the router.
who is your internet service provider and what is the brand or model no. of your modem?
What is the operating system of your laptop?
I can give you the steps on how you can configure the router for internet and after that i can give you the steps on how to setup the wireless on the router.
Sounds like you are setup to use Internet Connection Sharing. don't do this. Have each computer connect to the internet via the router. If the router is wireless connect all computers wirelessly to the router that are wireless capable and any computers that are not wireless capable, connect them to the router via a cat5 cable to the cat5 ports on the router. This will solve your problem. BPCS
