hi there,
i had UMAX ASTRA 4100 FLAT BED SCANNER. IF SCAN WITH LOW DPI SAY 100, ITS SCANS PROPERLY,BUT WHEN I INCREASE IT TO 300 DPI.
THE SCANNER DOESN'T RESPOND OR DROPS IN MIDDLE.
I EVEN GREASED THE BAR FOR EASY MOVING.
PLEASE SUGGEST ME.
THANKS
ROCKY

Check to see if the computer has adequate RAM's installed to work with the scanner. Don't forget that in the background it is running scanner software, and the operating system at the very least.
It is also possible that there is a buffer over-run timeout error occurring with the USB port processing. There may be an IRQ address conflict. The over-run timeout error from the USB port may not be reported.
Try connecting a USB powered hub between the computer and the scanner. The powered hub will offer some isolation, and being a hub it has some internal memory with data repeating circuits. I have seen this approach fix a lot of problems with digital cameras and scanners.
If it still has the same fault with the hub, then try using the hub with the scanner on different USB ports. There may be an issue with IRQ's and addresses. Moving to a different port will sometimes allow for a different address for reading the scanner.
Past these options that I mentioned, the fault is very involved. If you do not have the in depth knowledge base about how to trouble-shoot this fault, you will have to get some assistance.
