When I plug this in, there is a pop sound and sometimes a spark at the plug end and it gives off a smell. But the tv works fine still. Should I junk it or is there a fix for this?
Thanks, I love this little old tv.
Hi,
If everything still works OK, then chances are the problem is even before the internal power supply. This could be a component that simply is nearing its lifeend such as a capacitor to ground, a VDR (voltage dependent resistor), a line filter (technically just a coil of wire), or limiting resistor in line with the degaussing coil. This should be a relatively easy/low cost fix and any qualified TV repair professional should be able to do the job pretty quick.
In some instances, there could be nothing wrong with the TV. It is also possible that the smell and pop is an HV (high voltage) discharge due to accumulated dirt, dust and grime anywhere near the anode cap (end od red wire to picture tube) or the FBT (flyback transformer).
Of course, the best would be to seek the services of a qualified TV repair professional since an onsite diagnosis would best serve your purpose.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards.
Thank you for using FixYa.
