If you have a wide flatscreen tv it could be that the picture size is in the wrong mode. under the mode button on your tv remote should be two buttons labeled wide and zoom. try pushing these buttons to adjust the tv screen size.

The text along the sides of the tv screen are not completely in view

you need to change the 'zoom' on the tv by the remote.
Normal mode frames the 4:3 video to the 16:9 picture area by displaying it in its original aspect ratio, with vertical gray or black bars on both sides of the screen. The disadvantage of this method is the fact that the image is small by virtue of not using the entire width of the screen. This is also known as the 4:3 mode.
Full mode Full mode horizontally stretches the 4:3 video evenly across the entire width of the screen. This is the proper mode to display anamorphic video. If used for standard aspect ratio video, everything on the screen will appear wider than normal. Contrast this with anamorphic video displayed without processing on a 4:3 display, in which people on the screen will appear taller than normal. This is also known as the 16:9 mode.
Zoom mode Zoom mode evenly stretches the picture both horizontally and vertically, until the picture fills the entire width of the screen. This crops out the top and bottom of the picture. This mode is used for letterboxed and open matte video.
14:9 mode Main article: 14:9
In 14:9 mode, the picture is magnified more than in Normal mode, but less than in Zoom mode, while retaining the original aspect ratio.
Wide Zoom mode Wide Zoom mode, also called Just mode, Horizon, or Smart Stretch, progressively stretches the picture horizontally, less in the middle and more on the edges. This allows normal aspect ratio video to be displayed across the entire width of the screen, with minimal cropping, and with much less of the unpleasing visual stretching effect of Full mode.

My TV picture keeps stretching beyond the screen. Can I adjust it?

Some sets and some CABLE OR SAT BOXES also have a feature where you can adjust height or width of the picture--look carefully in both units menus to see if you have it.

We have a Plilips 32 pfl. We have been playing DVD's with this TV but we cannot watch it with the entire width of the screen. When we watch our HDTV cable, it views the entire screen but not the (non-HD)...

Of course its possible! You can use either your tv remote or your cable remote. On the cable remote it is usually the # sign, hd zoom, or stretch.

If you use your tv remote go into your menu and look for your setup or settings. Go to the picture option and select pass through or auto adjust.

You should be good to go after that:)

well you will have to see what you can do to clean up the remotes contacts, use a little baking soda and water to clean out the inside with a towel and then clean up the contact surface of the spring and the flat side, cleaning off the rust and acid burn should give you enough contact to get a good pair of Duracell's to work and you can remote the stretch off.
it is imperative to get the remote working, even if some one needs to rebuild the contact area from old parts from some other device with batteries.

Picture stretching beyond he edge of the screen

One of the more common reasons a TV has part of the picture off the screen is due to an incompatible screen format or aspect.
Check to see if there is a format or aspect button on the remote or if these options are available in the menu.
If so, then try a different format as one may work better for what you are watching.

HOrizontal width problem

With older sets i found dust as the main culprit in simmular situations.check for any  adjustment pot on the circiut controlling the screen width[normaly 3 pots close together open back of set to reveal electronic's]. be very carefull not being electrified as the set must be in operation while doing the adjustment.even turning the pot forward and back and then to the original position sometimes solve the problem.

Screen Widens Out Constantly

you might be getting more supply from regulated power supply if you get wide pictureor width have to be adjusted by width control. but if it stretchs out & lose some of the picture on the right and left edges it might be due to horizontal output section. 1 loose contact in connector. 2 some capacitor might be defective in h/section caution please do not open the set unless you know about high voltage in tv set.

Distortions in sides

Sounds like you might be in the panoramic display mode... check your remote for a button labelled "WIDE" - it's on the left side just below the "GUIDE" button. Hitting WIDE will cycle through the various viewing modes (normal, zoom and panoramic).
