Here is my solution:
Around the time it happened I did a few things to my computer. I had been trying NOD, it ran out - so I removed the program. When I did that my McAfee was gone. So, I had to go through their web help to get it back. It didn't want to just download again through their site. I had put in a trial version of Microsoft Office 2007. After I got that all done my java wouldn't work for yahoo games. All this was within a few days of each other, even the darkening of the screen, over and over.
Tonight, I noticed on my newly added McAfee, has a registry cleaner. So I used it. I also went into my program file folders and saw that NOD was still in there - deleted it and a couple of other programs that I had tried once, but, thought they had been removed through the remove programs, in the control panel.
My Monitor screen works fine and I was going to spend 200 on a new monitor.

make sure the 'VGA' lead is plugged in properly. if still dark turn up the brightness on the monitor. if still dark after that, go onto the computer settings and turn up the brightness on the display settings.
If the power light turns yellow, there is no signal being received by the monitor from your computer's graphics card. The screen will shut off (go into idle mode), which is a low-power state, that saves energy. Check that the cable on the back of your computer is plugged into the right graphics card (many PCs come with more than one, these days). There may be one built into the computer's mainboard, and another one may be on a separate graphics card located somewhere else on the machine. Only one of these will work on startup. If one doesn't work, try the other.
The high pitch sound is coming from the inverter. It is faulty and needs to be repaired or replaced. The inverter supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp, this lamp gives the backlight to the LCD so you can see the LCD images.
