Disassemble media player and remove broken lcd. Like all other lcd screens, there must be a serial number or model number written on it.
Search that serial number on internet. You may also ask manufacturer if they may provide a new lcd screen. If you can not find a new screen, as a last resort you may try to find faulty same product to replace it's working screen with your broken one.
Here are a couple of links of were to get a replacement LCD Screen.
It should come apart fairly easy and the lcd ribbon should unplug so then you can place the new one in and plug it in.
I hope this helps to give you an idea of the cost.
Sounds like the backlight of your LCD screen is broken. You can try to replace the LCD screen yourself, the part is available on any auction website. There is an iPod classic Repair service that can fix it for you. There is an iPod classic repair guide that can show you how to do the repair yourself.
It does not worth it. It's better you change its LCD.
It's original LCD is Samsung LTG430WQ-F02. But it is hard to find at cheap price.
But you can also change it with Sharp LCD screen which is spare part for the Playstation Portable (PSP 1000).
I bought one from ebay for 15 USD , replace, It is working great.
Search in ebay : "sharp lcd psp 1000"
