You need one of those OCR (optical character recognition) software to scan documents as text. Your scanner may have a free version of this. A good example is Omnipage pro

My HP C4750 scanner will only save a scanned document page as an image, TIFF, JPEG, etc. Always as an image even when I say to save as a Word document. Please tell me how I can overcome this. Doug...

Scanners only save word documents as images there is no way by which a scanner will save a scanned document as a word document. Although there are 3rd party applications which can help convert your scanned items from image to word documents. To get these applications go to google and type "convert PDF to word document" on google and a host of available applications will be displayed go through and download the one which suites your use more.
Hope this solution has been helpful?

On the first screen you get, just below "File Type", you can choose the option "Save to File Save Options…".
On the next screen (again, just below "File Type") you can, as desired, Tag/Untag the option "Create One File Per Scanned Page…"

When I save a scanned document you increase the file size. Please. Thanks.

Document size can be set before you scan.
Your scanner software should give you options for type of document and resolution settings. If your documents are to large, set resolution lower.
Example, Black and white or greyscale scans are much smaller in size than color documents.
Saving files as jpg will compress the file for storage.
If you have an image editing program you can decrease the size of the file after the scan.

Scanned documents too large

When you scan them, save them as a different type of document. Try saving them as a web document. They will reproduce almost as good and will be a lot smaller in size (bytes, not inches).

How to scan picture to upload on computer

First, ensure you are connecting the scanner to your computer. I'm assuming USB connection, and that you're using an operating system supported by this device.

Next, install the drivers and software for this device. Those should have come with an installation disc, but if you don't have that disc, you can get them from the PIXMA MP830 support site, here:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=123&modelid=12804

To scan a single document, place the document:
1. Place the document face down on the platen glass.
2. Open the MP Navigator 2.2 software.
3. Click Scan Photo/Document.
4. Click Document Type drop-down arrow and select the type of document to be scanned. Chose from the following types.
  • Color Document(Simplex): Select this to scan one side of color documents.
  • Color Document(Duplex): Select this to scan both sides of color documents.
  • B/W Document(Simplex): Select this to scan one side of monochrome documents.
  • B/W Document(Duplex): Select this to scan both sides of monochrome documents.
  • Text(Simplex): Select this to scan one side of text documents.
  • Text(Duplex): Select this to scan both sides of text documents.
5. Click 'Specify' and set the preferences as required. Click here for detailed information

6. After making the setting changes, click 'Scan'

7. Click 'Save to PC' or 'Save as PDF file'. Save to PC is displayed when an image is captured with Scan Photo/Document or Batch Scanning

The directions for Batch Scanning, or using the ADF to scan, are shown below.
  1. Place the document(s) in the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF).
    1. To scan using the ADF, remove any documents from the platen glass.
    2. Open the document tray.

      mp830_documenttrayopened.jpg
    3. Insert the documents face-up in the ADF and then adjust the document guides.

      Note:
When scanning using the ADF, the documents will automatically feed.

  2. On the Windows desktop, double-click 'MP Navigator 2.2'.
    1. Alternatively, on the Windows taskbar, click 'Start', point to '(All) Programs', 'Canon', then 'MP Navigator 2.2'.
    2. Then click 'MP Navigator 2.2'. MP Navigator opens.

  3. Click 'Batch Scanning'.

    * Text(Simplex): Select this to scan one side of text documents.

    * Text(Duplex): Select this to scan both sides of text documents.

  5. Click 'Specify' and set the preferences as required. Click here for detailed information.

  6. After making the setting changes, click 'Scan'.
    1. After the documents are scanned, a dialog box will appear indicating to load the next document.

    2. After the next document is loaded, click 'Scan'.

I'm trying to use the scanner to scan some documents and store it in a folder in the computer. Can you help me with this? Ray

Your software will usually ask where you want to store the document once it's scanned. A lot of software is intuative enough to guide you through each step.

How do I change the type of file my scanner saves a document in?

No .Type reconiznition software is very complicated and expensive. All a scanner does is divide the sceen into millions of dots and copies those dots in Picture(JPEG) format. It's software know nothing except to copy what is there.
