You then must have re-installed your XP, and if no other Hardware configuration changed then it sounds as if you do not have all the necessary drivers reloaded.
Check your Device manager if there are any notifications and update all drivers.
Then look at this and follow these steps to also identify where your issues may be.:

Hello chiricoca, when you "Install Hareware" such as the {HDD}.
You 'need' to "Install the Drivers" with the {CD} that came with the "HDD."
You should have a {CD} that have the "Software" for the HDD.
"Hopefully you have a [Optical Disk Drive], a CD / DVD Player, to 'use', to install the Drivers?
  • First thing you want to do is:
  • Turn-off the Computer.
  • !Warning: To "Prevent Shock" which can lead to 'Injury,' and or "Damage to the Computer!
  • "Unplug the Computer from the "Wall Outlet" {AC Socket}.
  • Disconnect [All Power Sources from the Computer].
  • Let the Computer (Drain the Voltage from the Capacitors for at 'least' an 1/2 Hour).
  • Next, "Uninstall / Disconnect the HDD from the Computer.
  • Place the {CD / DVD} into the "Tray."
  • Next, follow 'all' the instructions, to install the Drivers.
  • Once the "Drivers are installed!
  • Install, and 'reconnect' the HDD.
  • Reconnect 'all' Power Sources.
  • Turn-on the Computer.
  • !Notice the "Operations" of the Computer.
  • Did the Computer "Boot-up?"
  • Did the Computer [Load] the Operating System?"
  • Restart the Computer.
  • Press [F2] button, to get into BIOS / CMOS {Setup}.
  • Verify! That the HDD is [Installed]?
  • Press {F10} button, to 'Save all Changes"
  • Reboot into "Windows"
  • Verify HDD in the [Control Panel] > Hardware and Sound> "Device Manager"

Sata HDD NOT DETECTING IN XP SETUP

If you're using a scsi card and connecting the hard drive to the card you need to have the scsi set-up floppy disk. When the blue screen starts during windows installation watch the bottom of the screen. It will tell you to press F6 key then to insert the floppy disk.
If you're using a sata drive connected directly to the motherboard (not in a raid configuration) you shouldn't need anything but the windows disk. The motherboard drivers and utilities disk should have the files to create the scsi install disk.

Problem with pc

You probably need to check the cooling fan setup ( some motherboards give the control on the task manager or a sperate software to control it) This seems to be a problem of overheating which might have started after the installation of new ram.
