Click on start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > click on System Restore > Now a wizard will come select Next > now you will see a calendar .there you have to select the day on which you found that your system was ok........
for ex if you have installed os on january and by now it is may .you can select date from march ,february ,january in the calendar.and click next ..or select the first system restore ...but take backup of important files in window directory........
Good Luck

To get the state as in when it was new, you would need to run the restore dvd or then reinstall xp from the setup cd. you would loose all files and programs.

How to restore my Dell Optiplex 170L without losing my XP professional OS

Try CTRL + F11 when powering up.

What this does (or should do) is initialize Dell's System recovery utility. It will restore the system back to it's factory original state (the state the system was in when it left the factory). This won't remove the operating system, but if you've upgraded the OS or made significant custom changes to the computer (software wise) you may lose all the changes. If XP professional is the original OS on the system when you bought it, the recovery will leave the OS on the system. If you've upgraded to Pro, and you still have your install disc, or have access to an install disc and your XP Pro product key, you can reinstall XP Pro after the recovery.

In that case all you have to do is to boot from the recovery disks that came with the pc when you bought it. From then the process is pretty much automatic.

Need to wipe my hard drive and start over due to problems. I did not recieve an XP CD. How do i reset the s/w to is original state when the 1st system restore has long since been deleted?

Go to the manufacturer website and see if you can purchase a replacement copy of the original software ... the license should be affixed to yor computer.

You should get the software for your hard drive manufacturer to wipe the drive.

My pc will not startup when i turn on it appears it crashed i have boot cd that i created. i tried to repair and it will not. im not sure if im doing it right.. i have windows xp.. the original error it...

Hello, Trace.

Here's some help regarding fixing this error. From HP Support:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=&product=89876&docname=c00188632

If you are still experiencing a problem, your created boot CD is probably faulty.

If it still is not working, depending on your hardware manufacturer, you may be able to access/run Factory Restore. Boot your system and press F10, F11, Alt+F10, or Ctrl+F11 to access Factory Restore. Please note that Factory Restore restores to the original settings and will wipe out anything that you have installed or saved on your PC.

Hope this helps.

How do I return our Dimension 5100 Dell Desktop back to it's original state? Lost the recovery CD.

Have you tried restoring your operating system to a previous restore point?
To do this click on start- all programs - accessories - system tools - system restore. Then choose a date from the calendar which corresponds to a time before you began to experience problems on your PC. Follow the on-screen instructions to restore your PC to its original state.
Note that a system restore will remove any programs which were installed AFTER the selected restore point date.
Hope this helps.

Do I need windows xp disc to reinstall?

To format your hard-drive then re-install Windows? Yes, you would need one.

If you're attempting to rid yourself of a virus, you can definitely attempt a system restore. However, most modern viruses are smart, and the first thing they will do is integrate themselves into the system restore files. If however you have a system-restore disk (CD-ROM) which came with the computer, those will obviously not be infected (nor will they be infected) and can be used to restore the system to the state it was in when you first turned it on.

Let me know if I can help you further.

Windows xp home edition reinstall

If you use his disk, that will be better, because if it is original HP disk, it should install all original drivers at all, however this may delete all files on the computer depending on the type of installation you do.

Installing an older version of XP home does not make a big difference , as windows will update the system using automatic updates. What must be done, is ensuring that all proper drivers are installed.

Check device manager, in control panel/system, and see if all devices are installed with proper drivers.
