Choose a compatible encryption method for both the router and the PC or laptop connecting to the router.. You may choose WPA on your router and you should SET WPA also in your laptop. Just try to check this compatibility.

How to Connect a Laptop to a Wireless Router Using a Windows Operating System
Follow the router's manual to set up the router and its Internet connection , which will probably require connecting a wired client to the router. Once the wireless router is set up, the wired connection is no longer necessary. However, it's best to leave the wired client connected if it's a separate computer from that on which you're going to set up WiFi. If something goes wrong, you can access the administration interface again.
Gather information from the setup process. In order to set up the wireless client, you will need to know the service set identifier (SSID), the Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP) key and the channel and mode.
Boot up the laptop and plug in the WiFi card. This will not be necessary if your laptop has an integrated WiFi card.
Install any drivers needed to use the WiFi card. Insert the disc that came with the WiFi card and follow the on-screen installation process. Most discs will trigger a new hardware wizard that makes installation extremely simple.
Double-click on the "WiFi Connection" icon. It can be found in the system tray at the bottom of the laptop screen.
Click on "Properties."
Select the "Wireless Networks" tab.
Use the "Add" button at the bottom of the dialog if your WiFi network isn't in the "Available Networks" section.
Click on "Configure" when you see your network's SSID in the "Available Networks."
Enter your network's SSID and WEP key.
Click on "Start," then choose "Connect To" and "Wireless Network Connection." Your computer should now be able to access the WiFi network. If the WiFi network is connected to the Internet, it should also be able to connect to the Internet.

A friend installed vista the computer had been

1st connect with landline cable. Make sure all is working fine. Then enter a command prompt. (Start-Run->cmd {Enter}) Type "ipconfig". The gateway should be either 192.xx.xx.xx. or 10.xx.xx.xx. If you have a small network then your gateway is probably your wireless router. If your router is not your wireless device you will have to find it using ipscan.exe or scanner.

Let's say for arguments sake that your gateway is your wireless device. Open up a browser windows and input the gateway as "http:// gatewaynumbers ". At this point you need to check your wireless settings.

You need your SSID, Wireless Security (WEP, WPA, etc.) encryption, and passphrase" from your wireless router/access point.

(Note: unless you are the only one using the router try not to make any changes until you clear it with other users)

Check to see if your router has mac filtering on or off. Off is better while troubleshooting. Another term for MAC address filtering is Wireless Card list, there are others but it depends on the router you are using. If MAC or IP filtering is on then you will NOT be able to connect to the SSID unless you are on the list... hence disable for now is good idea.

Disconnect from wired landline (you should not have two connections wireless and wired at the same time). Assuming that your Wireless device driver is working properly (see Device Manager under network devices) you should be able to right-click your wireless device on the taskbar and select view available networks. You should see SSID here. Input your info and you should be good to go.

If not you will have to enter SSID manually in the Network Connections area. Right-click Wiress Connection from Network Connections and Select properties. 2nd tab should be wireless connections. Click the Add button and enter your information and click OK.

To test you should be able to go to a command prompt and type ipconfig and get numbers similar to when you had landline connected. To test your internet connnection type " Ping yahoo.com" and you should get 4 replys. Hope this help. Best Regards, -

I have just got a Belkin N1 vision wireless modem router. I have set it up and have it working ok on a Unsecure wireless network. But as soon as I try to secure the network. I get the following message...

Hi,

Right-click on the network icon in the bottom right hand corner of your screen, Press Connect to a Network. You should see your wireless network in the list. Before you secured it, you could automatically connect to it because it was unsecured. Now you will have to double click on it and enter the username and password you secured your router with.
Once you have done that, there should be a box for you to tick that says 'Automatically connect to this network'. Tick that.
Done.

Hope this helps

I recently bought an Amilio Laptop made by fujitsu Siemens I have tried two different wireless routers and cannot get the laptop to connect with either. It does have wireless built in. What am I doing...

Hi,

It might be that the Operating System is preventing connection to the router because:
  • the network is unsecured. look for the "Connect Anyway button";
  • the Amilo's WiFi is set to a manually configured IP address, pls try "Obtain an IP address automatically" in the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties of the Wireless Network Connection of the Control Panel/Network Connections;
  • it maybe that your Amilo has its own WiFi configuration and if so, you should disable the OS to manage your wireless connection.
Incidentally, you could try downloading a third party Wireless network detection software that is to verify that the Amilo's wireless card is working and that it can sense the Wireless router. An example would be NetStumbler.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back exact model number of the Amilo laptop, how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

You need to have a wireless network in range. AV and firewall software are a good idea. To connect to a wireless network you should have a little icon that looks like a monitor with )) beside of it on your task bar. Right click on it then select view avaible wireless networks. then select a unsecured network, wait for it to connect and then surf on.
