If your watch is an automatic watch and not a quartz(battery)then it needs to be worn 6-8 hours a day to maintain power in the main spring as its motion that winds the watch.
If you are wearing the watch and its slow then it may need a service if its 3 years old or more. All the lubrication drys out and the watch needs cleaning,re lubricating and testing.
For this work you will need a skilled watchmaker go to www.rolexrepairs.co.uk where a postal repair service is available.

If the watch is not worn for a day, is it normal for it to stop or slow down? Vintage SS mens datejust, oyster perpetual.

mcdevito75 here, Yes it is normal, especially if your Rolex is an automatic watch. The motion of your Wrist / Hand keeps your watch wound thru the Counter balance on the movement, as the counter balance turns it winds the mainspring little by little, thus keeping your watch wound. Once you take off your watch, if long enough the mainspring simply un-winds and slows and will eventually stop your watch completely. You can keep your Rolex wound even when you take it off by means of a watch winder, a small machine that will keep your watch in motion, or by hand, by rocking the watch back and firth in your hand for about 30 seconds, say before you gpo to bed at night, this way there is always some wind to your watch.

How to adjust a Lord Elgin wrist watch ca. 1950 so that it keeps good time. Currently it loses about 5 min./day.

The first thing I'd recommend for a 60 year old watch is to have a watchmaker clean and oil it. Over the years the oil gets thick and gummy and slows down the watch as you're experiencing. Once it's properly cleaned and oiled the watchmaker will test and adjust it to ensure that it keeps good time. This is not a DIY job but one for a trained watchmaker with the proper tools, lubricants and experience.

New watch is losing 5 to 15 minutes a day

This could be that the battery is slow. Newer swiss watches have a indicator in the movement of the watch that makes the sweep second hand skip every few seconds to indicate that the battery is slow. On regular japan made watches the watch just simply starts slowing down. Your watch could be new but the battery in it could have a long shelf life.

How do you know when the battery is low or flat

My watch has a similar issue recently. The light stopped working and I thought the watch was faulty but it was the battery was too low. Changed the battery and it started working again like a charm. Hope this helps!

Watch goes slow when wearing it but keeps time when not wearing it Because I started having a problem with an old reliable Acqua quartz analog watch running slow,  I replaced it with a new Timex quartz...

There is nothing wrong with your watch. Probably it's the one measuring heart rate and pulse (heart beats per second).
Use your users manual to set the watch.
By the way: Timex is one of the worst watch producers.

Casio Baby-G BG1500A watch. The analog hands are not keeping time. The digital time is accurate.

Yor watch needs a cleaning. In the old days watches had a mainspring and when dirt got in the gears, the pressure from the mainspring would push the dirt out. Now with quartz watches there isn't any pressure to push the dirt out and the watch stops, or slows down. You will find that it cost more to repair than to get a new one. If you need anymore assistance PLEASE let me know and I will be glad to help.

Submariner Winding Slips

crowbar040, you may have a problem with your mainspring click, which is supposed to keep the spring coiled as it winds. What might be happening is it is sticking and coming undone instead of winding. Or you could have a bad gear in your automatic.
