Hi possible quick fix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fX3Z7jHI1tM
Overheating is the main cause behind the occurrence of the e74 error. As a result, there is electrical failure. Repair isfairly simple to do thereare kits for sale to assist you with this here- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FOR-FAULTY-XBOX-360-X-CLAMP-FIX-REPAIR-KIT-RROD-E74-T8-T10-TOOL-SET-/190814584218?pt=UK_VideoGames_VideoGameConsoles_VideoGameConsoles&hash=item2c6d6f7d9a

Red light flashing and letter and numbers (e74)

The E74 error is caused by the scaler chip at the back of the console taking too much heat. To fix it you need to stop the heat build up.

You can do this yourself using a good guide that will show you how to fix it with household items or you can send it in and they will fix it for you.

E74 on xbox 360

i would recommend you turning it back and getting it repaired if you have a warranty, or you can try the towel trick. let it overheat while putting a towel wrapped around the console and it should be working again, thats if you dont want your xbox in perfect condition.

I have a e74 system error on my xbox 360. what can i do about this .

I recently had the E74 system error which started with as ‘black snow’ on the screen. There is an extended 3 year warranty that covers E74 and 3 Red Lights errors only.

I looked in to fixing it myself but thought might as well let someone else graze their hands getting the case off!

Despite the horror stories of it taking forever MS seemed to have pulled their finger out and made this a very efficient process, I got mine back within a week (I live in the UK and repairs get shipped to Germany).

Here's a quick breakdown of the process:

1. Go to www.xbox.com/support and click on the relevant link relating to your problem.

2. Go through the walkthrough. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT AS IT COULD JUST BE A LOOSE CONNECTION. If you've still no joy you can click a link to pick whether you are a US resident or not.

3. Type in serial number of the console (you don't need any receipts, I bought mine off eBay).

4. They send you a shipping label and a link to arrange UPS to come and pick up your console.

5. Bite your nails and rock manically in a corner until your console comes back (you can track the whole process at xbox.com).

I've sent back a first generation 360 and an Elite. Certainly worth considering as they will repair or replace your console!

If you want to attempt to fix the error yourself (and have no guarantee of sorting it and invalidate your warranty) search YouTube for ‘E74 fix' or ‘xbox towel trick’. This is supposed to overheated the console and re-solder dry solder joints. Only try if your warranty has run out and/or you own a bricked console!

Xbox not reading discs

This E74 represents a dead lens issue. try unplugging for a 5 minute period and plug back in. this should reset the board. if the E74 comes back on your screen, this is a dead lens warning. it will have to be repaired by a local tech shop or Microsoft tech.

E74 one blinking relight

Ok. You have a serious problem that you CAN NOT fix, but DO NOT FEAR! Microsoft has come out and said that if you have red lights that flash, more commonly known as "Red Rings of Death", they will send you another system. So all you need to do, is contact Microsoft and tell them your problem. The e74 error should say in screen "Hardware malfuction" because I had the same thing before. So don't worry about it and just talk to Microsoft. Good luck!

P.S. If you bought it from somewhere popular like Walmart somewhat recently, they will also take it back for you because that is what I did. Mine got the e74 error within the first month and I just sent it back to Walmart and got a 100% refund!
