Accidentally removed cable when transferring files between PC and Pilot. Removed battery, which unfroze screen. At startup, now getting message "Unable to format extended memory" for a split second before "Profiling Media Files" pops up and stays up. Nothing happens and no buttons work except on/off. Any help would be appreciated.

Mine was working perfectly after I accidentally let Norton Disk Doctor scan and fix disk error on it. Norton reported an incorrect boot sector error. As soon as I disconnected my player from the computer it got stuck in the initial “Insignia - Media Manager” screen. Since then it does not respond to any button combination and it is not longer recognized by any computer when connected through the USB port. It still shuts down if I hold the sliding power button in its right position for about 15 seconds. It also recognizes discharged battery condition and turns off itself; this happens 8 hours after left turned on and stuck in the initial screen by itself without a USB connection, as expected.

Nevertheless, here there is a funny and perhaps useful thing. The first time the problem aroused I left the player plugged to the USB port of the computer for along time. After approximately 4 hours, it waked up and connected with the computer in “Music Player Mode”. It showed no files, so I supposed it cleared its memory itself and solved the problem. However, when I disconnected it from the computer, it froze again in the same screen. Now it continues stuck even if I leave it several hours connected to the compute. If I disconnected it, the battery discharges eventually.

I am sure the boot sector became corrupted. Insignia made a big omission not including a way to easily erase the whole memory in these cases; data corruption is not that rare! The trick of turning the unit off, then turn it on while holding both the menu button and the ON button until it brings a menu that allows to clear the memory does not work for me. I tried these steps in another identical Insignia player and it worked. This hidden function might work for you if you have corrupted indexes or media library. Try it.

I also removed the battery but it did not help. Removing the battery is unnecessary since you can obtain the same results simply sliding and holding the power button for 15 seconds or more.

I am going to leave the player turned on and connected to my computer for a couple of days in order to see if it is recognized again, then I will try to reformat the unit. Otherwise... I will open the unit and play short circuiting some of the Flash memory pins to try to abort the Media manager. This works on Chinese players and there are full instructions at I think these players use the same Samsung flash chips.

Does somebody know another way to clear the memory unit? Is there a page with indication about how to disassemble this unit completely? I found pages that shows how to remove the battery, but that is not enough.

Thanks for your attention. And good luck!

nothing of consequence occured on that fateful day when my insignia pilot 8GB suddently stopped working for no appant reason. The problem is as follows: I cant see a thing on the screen because it is an aray of variously colored pixles makeing any reset on the player itself impossible. I can still play music, i just cant see what is playing. Is there any way to check if the player has a bug of somekind?

YES! Hold the POWER switch to the right while holding the MENU button. SERIOUSLY, I was having it be stuck on Profiling Media Files for a long time and THIS WORKED. It then comes up with ERASE INTERNAL MEDIA? Select YES.

it works!

Mine froze and some how holding the slider for the power to the right for longer than usual got it to come back on. this didnt work before but its easier than the annoying battery option. if this doesnt work then i would advise the battery option as the support page didnt help me at all. my player does this and i think its a software issue with the player. i did a lot of research and there doesnt seem to be any other reset options than the ones already posted.

Only way I've found to reset it when it freezes is to remove the back cover and unplug the battery and then pluc it back in again look for the black circle on the back it's just a sticker covering the screw. Just a simple eyeglass repair kit is all you really need hard part is connecting the battery again

Hello Kateyann6,

To reset the unit to the factory defaults or erase all files on the player do the following;
1. Press the MENU button
2. In the main menu select "Settings" and then press the PLAY/PAUSE button
3. Select "System" from the menu and then press PLAY/PAUSE.
4. Change any of the three settings listed depending on what you want to do. You can either erase all files from internal memory, erase all files from external memory or reset the unit completely back to factory defaults.

You can also try doing a soft reset on the unit by sliding the Power switch to the right and holding it for 10 seconds.

For your reference the support page for your MP3 player (with a PDF of the user's manual and other useful info) can be found at:

Please make sure that the player is reset and so the processor will reset. In all players there is a provision for resetting. If not the player can be connected to the PC and scanned for virus. If detected remove the files and format.
If there is no response the player memory is corrupt or damaged.

My mp3 player's screen doesn't work

You may need to now reset the player, that may have been a bit much for it. To reset your Sansa Mp3 player. Slide and hold the Power switch up for approximately 20 seconds. Release the Power switch. To turn the player on, slide the Power switch up then release instantly. If that does not get your player working again, try and Format to clear any corrupt files that may be present.

Welcome screen.

As a general rule, the software on the MP3 player has been corrupted and need to be reset to factory settings. Depending on the device, those are thepossibilty to RESET the device: - There is a recessed reset button or a pin hole where the reset button is hidden. - There is a Key or button combination to perform the reset via software (not unlike the 'soft' on/off key) - Remove the battery for 5 minutes - If you cannot get to the battery (often inbuilt), discharge the device completely by allowing the battery to drain in the ON mode (may need to do it several time to completely drain the player).

Triple Reset for Philips’ GoGear:

Disconnect the Go Gear from computer. Press the reset pinhole until the player turns off. Hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard. If this pop-up does not appear, reset the player again WHILE connected to the computer. Open the Philips Device Manager, and go to Repair Tab. Reset the player one more time while connected to computer. Follow the repair instructions.

After repair is complete, upgrade the firmware for this player. Will erase all the songs, but you should be gooOd to go again.
