To activate wi-fi security follow this steps, this must be done from a computer wired to the router (wifi is not recommended for changing the router configuration).

1) Open your favorite browser and go into the router config which would be either http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1

2) Login to the router. (If you have not already done so change the router default password, this should be your first security measure).

3) In the menu on the left click on "
Wireless Settings". You should see now the Wireless settings configuration page

4) Under Security options, select "WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy).

5) Under auntentication type, leave automatic and choose 64bit encription

6) In the KEY 1 input box enter the 10 digit key (password) you want to use to access the wifi network, this key is an hexadecimal number you can enter any combination of 0 to 9, and the letters A to F. for example "AAFF41525C" remember this key because it will be asked by your notebook the first time you want to connect to the secured wifi network.

This is one if the simplest methods of securing your wifi, if you are just doing this for a home router it will be the easiest one.

Need helpetting up wireless connection

WIRELESS ROUTER SECURITY
When you power up the wireless router and the LEDs are ON then the router appears to be OK and this also applies to the DSL or cable wireless modem. To check if the modem is configured to your ISP settings and the modem connects to the Internet, connect the modem with a LAN cable to your laptop and check if you can get into the Internet. To connect to your wireless router, it needs the router's wireless settings configured and also needs the wireless cards in all the laptops and or computers to be configured with the router's wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktop computers can communicate with your wireless router. To set-up and secure the wireless router from unauthorized access, follow these steps: - 1, Connect the wireless router to your computer with a LAN cable.
2. Start your browser and enter the router's configuration URL IP address.
3. Enter the router setup, login and password
4. Change the admin password
5. Go to the wireless settings and change the default SSID and turn off SSID broadcast.
6. Setup encryption key the strongest is WPA2 (if not then WPA). The encryption key can be easily set up using a passphrase (it can be an alpha numeric phrase or words). 7. For further security measures - turn on MAC address filtering and enter the MAC address of the wireless cards on the computer/s you want to connect to this wireless router.
8. Record the settings you have made and keep it in a safe place and Save the settings.
9. Configure the wireless cards on the computer/s with the SSID and encryption settings of the router.
10. Remove the LAN cable between the router and the computer then the computers should be able to connect to the router wirelessly.

If you connect the computer to the router , it works.
That means the wired connection is OK.
Open the set up page of the router check the wireless settings of the router.
I think your network is secured and you are not typing the correct network key.
just open the router set up and check the wireless settings .

How do you install the router so my laptop can connect to the internet? How does my laptop connect with the router and how can I secure the router so no one else except my son and I?

Are you trying to set up router ?
You can set up your router manually, without the CD.
Make sure that your computer is able to go online directly through the modem.
If your computer is able to go online through the modem, that means the modem is working fine.
You will need to connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router.
open the set up page of the router and change the settings of the router according to the ISP.

Can't connect home comp to laptop

how many wireless computers do you have?
is it a dekstop or laptop?
if desktop have you installed a wireless adapter? if laptop, is it using a built-in wireless adapter, have you enabled the wireless adapter or have you installed a wireless adapter?
-------

please make sure first that the wireless adapters are installed properly or enabled on your computers, if everythings OK.

-------

access the setup page of your router and change the wireless settings of it.

how to access the ui
- open the internet explorer
- on the address bar type in 192.168.1.1 hit enter
- enter admin under password, leave it empty for the username and click ok
- click the wireless tab
- set the wireless mode to mix, change the wireless network name or ssid with any preferred name you want to use, make sure to enabled the ssid broadcast and then click save settings.
- after that, under wireless tab, there are sub tabs, click wireless security
- set wireless security to WPA-PERSONAL, and under passphrase, enter your desired password for wireless connection, take note of it and please be reminded that its case sensitive.
- click save settings.
----------------------------
for your wireless computers, if adapters enabled and working fine, on the system tray you should have an icon for the wireless connection, doubles click on it and it will pop for the wireless connection window wherein you can see the name that you set on your router, all you have to do is select the name click on connect and it should ask you enter a password, enter the passphrase you set on the router and click connect. then check if you can go online, if yes do the same thing with other computers.

Have a great day ahead.

No network

The Wireless Security of the router doesn't match your laptop's wireless settings. Make sure you configure the wireless security password correctly on the laptop. If you don't know your wireless password, try these steps:

-Connect your laptop hard wired to the router.
-Open Internet Explorer and on the Address Bard type http://192.168.1.1 press enter.
-It will prompt you for username and password. By default, there's no username and on the password type admin and hit OK. If admin didn't work, type your own password for the router.
-When you get to the Setup page, click on Wireless Tab, then click the sub-tab Wireless Security.
-Look for Security Mode. If Security Mode is WPA-Personal, the Passphrase is the wireless security key that you need to enter on the laptop's wireless settings. If the Security Mode is WEP, the WEP Key 1 is your wireless security key. Connect to the wireless network and type it in. That should solve your wireless connection problem.

Router

Can the laptop see the router at all? When you try to connect do you see the router's SSID? Does it connect?

Have you altered any of the router's settings or is it set up like factory default? Did you enable wireless security?

Assuming the router is set up like factory default, try this. On the laptop Start->Run then type "command" (with no quotes) and click on OK. A black window will pop up. Type the following:

ping 192.168.1.1

If you can provide some of this info maybe we can help.
