Question about Samsung DVD-HR720 DVD Recorder

HR 720 does not burn to DVR -R media

My HR 720 does not burn to any DVD -R media. Now it only accepts DVD -RW Sony 1x-2x compatible. If I insert DVD -R ( used Imation 16x, Sony 1-16x, TDK 1-16x, Philips1-16x, also Benq, Samsung, Verbatim...) - either a message "Cannot play or burn this disc" appears, or if not , when burning starts, message "Cannot copy because of error detection" appears. Sometimes it burned to Philips DVD -R 1-16x, but there was many defects on the DVD and no player nor computer was able to play it. Also from
-RW it currently accepts only Sony -RW 1-2x mentioned above and sometimes Philips -RW 1-2x. Other - for example TDK-RW 2-4x - when formatting I got message "Cannot format because of error detection". I have to say, that all the media, that were "unaccepted" by this recorder were used then for burning on computer without any problems a also they are playable also on the HR720. I used the cleaning disc - nothing changed.
Has anybody such experience or even an advice, what to do?

    Hello there,

it seems I have found a solution for this problem. I decided for this step, as the recorder for a few days did not accept any media, including "working" Sonys, no burn was available.

The only thing I was able to try was to increase intensity of the laser. And after that - yeeeaaahh, now it accepts all Sonys, but also TDK-RW (never accepted before), also TDK -R. That's all I have tried till now and it works!

    So how to do that?

    1.Uncover the device

2.Uncover the DVD-part in the middle of the device (5screws, then slide the cover to back and remove it

3.close to the optic there are 2 small adjustable resistors (potentiometers they look like small screws) - one marked as DVD, the other as CD (white letters on the PCB)

4.turn the DVD marked potentiometer about 30-45degrees clockwise.....that's all, put the covers back and try to format, burn.... In my case till now no error, no system error or any other problem that had occured before.

I suppose, this can help with similar problems in this forum (burned media not readable in other players etc.) If it does not help, simply turn back the potentiometer to its previous position)

    Good luck :)

Hello, I would like to send you a picture of the print of a HR738 since I do not 'find' the 2 screws you mentioned. Could you send me your email adress to ''?
    Thank you, Alfred

I agree. My HR720 DVD not only would not burn discs but also had trouble playing them. I was ready for throwing it in the bin!
I gave the solution a try as mentioned by mysus. Works fine now. Thanks a lot for the info mysus.

Hallo everybody,

this guy "mysus" is a genius! I have had above problem on a Samsung HR-725 (160 Gb Version of the HR-720) now for approx. 1 year. I´ve called the Samsung Hotline and tried other dealers - nothing worked. Today I came accross this help and tried it out immediately - and it works perfectly. However, you do need to know a little about PCBs and electronics.
I used a variety of different -R DVDs and they all seem to work now. Many thanks once again for this fantastic link.

I have mini DVD RW 1.4GB can I play this back on my MAC

Depends upon the format of the file on the disk. A MAC will read the disk, but unless you have the correct codecs installed the file/s may be unreadable. You'll probably be OK though.

Well a quick check here says it should manage 4 x DVD write speeds:-

The only thing I can think of is that lens may have some dust on it, try a CD lens cleaning disk or a blast of air from an aerosol spray can.

After this, I'm afraid its down a replacement.

I can't get the DVD out of the player

Need a firmware upgrade. Emerson will charge you for it. Otherwise you need to find Dvds it will accept. Hard to do with all of the newer dvds. -RW only 1Xor 2X. -R 1X-2X. Memorex would not work for me. Multi- speed dvds over listed speeds will not work. Maxell -R 1X-4X worked for me. Good luck finding any.

I have a LG GE20 DVD Rewriter Is a DVD+RW disc a format that is editable and suitable for this unit?

The LG G20 DVD Rewriter is an advanced external burner that supports 'editable' Rewritable DVD+RW disk.
As a generic comment, not all writable/rewritable media are made equal and problem with branded & unbranded disks are not uncommon, so stick to brands that work for you for your specific unit!
The following is the advertised support for your unit, hope it helps:

I can't write DVD with my Pioneer DVR-107D DVD±RW

What brand of media are you using?

You are burning at 2x because that is the highest that this drive supports.

You would also want to instruct Nero to Verify by ticking the check box and either finalize disc or make it mulitsession, if your burner supports multisession DVDs

Couldn't format and burn the DVD+RW

It could be a problem of the version you are using with Nero 7, try upgrading. It also could be that you are try to burn the DVD RW at a speed it cannot be burned (say 4x), try burning it at 2x.
Hope this works!
