the stereo is a philips FW C139 mini hi-fi system. The power suply is through a socket, when plugged in no light comes on (i think it used to) but the date appears. There was a remote control but its lost so im not sure if it works with the remote. The stereo belongs to a special needs client of mine who possibly has broken it due to pressing buttons too much? but i was wondering if it could have locked and if there was anything that can be done. the stereo has def not been shaken or anything as its locked in a box. cheers for any help x

Need much more info like what make/model, how you are trying to apply power, and whether there is a remote involved.

My stereo sysytem is a mini stereo: serial number 10200055. It currently says "protect", what is this and how do we return our system to normal operations?

Hi there,

When the word PROTECT appears on this display, this means the unit has detected a critical fault which could potentially cause harm to your stereo system.

The most common cause is a short circuit somewhere - something even as simple as loose speaker wiring could cause a short, triggering the Protect message.

You will need to determine if there is a possible short somewhere, so I recommend you start by firstly turning power OFF, disconnecting all speaker wires, then turn unit back ON.

Operate the stereo (without speakers) and turn volume up:
  • If Protect message appears when turning volume up, then stereo unit itself has an internal fault
  • If no Protect message appears, then suspect the speakers may be causing the issue.
  • Reduce volume and turn unit OFF
Re-connect speakers (ensure the connections are secure), turn unit ON:
  • If turning volume up triggers the Protect message again, there is an issue with the speakers or connections

Hope this helps.....

Hi, my display is not woking on my JVC PC 55. Although, the stereo DOES WORK !! It doesn't even light up. Why is tghis? Thanks in advance, Joel

Possible failure of the display unit or the power to the display unit. This is irrespective of the functioning of the set as the main processor is working and the display operates on the sub-processor.
remove panel and check the flexible strip and the voltage to the unit to confirm.

My Technics stereo system ...the display screen shows nothing

The question is, do you hear any sound? Is just the display off or is the entire unit shutdown? Can you tell?

These displays are known to develope poor solder connections at the power input and ground pins. If you can solder, open up the unit (unplugged of course) and examine the pins for the display. This will be on the PC board attached to the front panel. The pins at either end of a long line of pins will be the power and ground pins. Reasolder those pins, taking care not to short the pins together and try the unit once done. If that does not resolve the problem (assuming it is just a display problem), update this with as many details as you can about the behavior of the unit and we'll look further.

Denon DRA-25/25L Stereo Receiver. On power up the display lights but no sound is produced by the unit. When working normally a click (relay?) is heard about 5secs after power up and normal speaker output...

Without looking at the schematics for this particular model, I'd surmise that the click is indeed a speaker protection relay. Generally this is fed by a number of different sense circuits that watch for power amp issues and/or excess speaker current and/or power supply output stability. Although the relays do indeed fail at times, generally it is not the relay that is at fault. If you have a scope and a schematic, you can check the various circuits that feed the relay for the exact cause. If not, you can do some experiments that might help deduce the problem: e.g. do headphones work when speakers do not, does the relay click on when no speakers are connected (or selected), etc. In my experience, it is most often the output transistor(s) in the power amp. But not always ;-)

Overload on Technics SA DA10

Cracked solder joints due to excessive heat cycling. Do not place in a shelf system. Top MUST be open for 1 ft. or better for proper convective cooling effect. Mine suffered same fate but repaired locally.
