am not so sure if this is a similar issue with iomega external drive in which the drive wont show up on My Computer but when the external drive was plugged into an ubuntu machine the drive was being detected and working just fine.
Please try to do the same. plug your external drive to an ubuntu machine and lets see if it can be detected. If it is then the hard disk has a similar issue with iomega drives. check this link for the solution.
1. Go to System Profiler (see in Applications then Utilities) and check whether (dependent upon whether it is USB or Firewire) the drive is showing up 2. Have you checked whether the cable is okay, have you got a spare cable. 3. Change the usb port on the imac that you are using (could be damaged)
solved: after referring to the userguide, I found that I formated my drive with a OS format, which can not be recognized by VISTA >> formated to FAT32 and now it works...
If all you need is to get the data off your HD at this time and work later on fixing it. Open "IPConfigurator" and it will find your Lacie. At this point you should be able to open it via an internet browser, select HTTP, enter username and password. Then select the item and it will open/download and you can re-save it or view it from the internet.
sounds like hd is getting hot via firewire try and use the usb lead if same problem then get your files off quick and repace drive any thing above 80 gig will get hot in use that's why I use harddrive coolers on my large 300gig 400gig internal and only use my 250 gigs and 160 gig only when i need the files off they are turned off all time
