One out of Two Partitions won't mount on My Lacie F.A. Porsche External Hard Drive
OK....so this is different...I have a 300GB Lacie External Hard Drive (Whatever model is "Designed by F.A. Porsche") I use it on a MAC OS editing video with Final Cut Pro 4.4. I bought it about 3 months ago, formatted it as Mac OS (I think it might be Extended, I can't remember), and re-partitioned it into 2 partitions: Lacie 2 & Lacie 3. Everything worked fine, the drive was quick, editing was smooth. Yesterday, Lacie 3 disappeared. When I looked in disk utilities, it showed Lacie 2, and underneath it, Lacie 3 was listed, but it was grayed out. When I clicked on it for info, it says "Not Mounted" I thought it odd, since one of the partitions was mounted and the other not. I had never seen that problem before. So I clicked repair, and got this error:
We have alot of important video files on this partition. Is there ANY chance of getting it up and running again, or of salvaging the files? If you need more info, let me know!

I found that often, external hard drives just don't have any active partitions and thus don't show up in Windows. Go into the control panel, administrative tools, computer management and then the disk manager and see if it has a partition. If it's just unallocated space, right click and make one.
Try connecting the Lacie to another computer, if it doesn't work then the hard disk may need to be formatted using Disk Manager. I suggest you format as a primary partition in FAT32.
If it doesn't work then it is possible that the hard drive in the Lacie has failed. To test the hard drive, remove it and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a working computer's USB port. If it deosn't detect it as an external drive and you connot open folders and files then it is faulty. You can install a new hard drive in the Lacie and then format in FAT32
There are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.
Sounds like the hard drive in the Lacie has fauled.

We have a few of these Lacie Design by F.A. Porsche 500GB drives in our office. Our editor's drive stop working this morning (was fine the day before) and had all her files backed up from the last three years on it and was making a very soft clicking sound. After taking the whole thing apart and trying drive in another F.A. Porsche caddy with no success, we tried a different power supply hey presto it started up no problems. My drive that suddenly stop working earlier in the year we tried a power supply from a external Lacie DVD Writer and again drive is working. Just to make sure tried the original power supply and would not mount. So if your hard drive stops working it maybe the power supply rather the the hard drive.
conect your harddisk to computer whch has windows xp. Then go to start emnu then type in run 'cmd"
then you can see command propmt. Then go to your external drive letter like f: then type 'chkdsk /r" then pres "y' then it fix error on hardisk. Aslo you can format it . Just take backup of data which you need then right clik on drive licon and format it.then it works fine.
What system is the laptop?
File differences is the ext-hard drive FAT32 or DOS? Therefore XP [NTFS] is not 'seeing' its content.
On the XP machine
go to start/Control Panel/Admin tools/computer management/storage/removable storage/and check the file type
