Question about Dryers

My Maytag electric dryer drum will not turn. The belt is still in one piece. Motor runs but belt slips on motor pully. I can put on the belt with some force and it turns the drum. Seems like a lot of drag on the belt.

Hi,

It is highly possible that the belt has expanded from its original/designed diameter and therefore slips. Normally of course a replacement is required.

If for some reason you would still think that the belt is usable and as you have posted, there is "a lot of drag", the alternate possibility is that the drum needs lubrication at its pivot points which would be bearings of some sort. Corrective procedure would then be the application of appropriate lubricant.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

If I may add, the drag might also be from the motor and not from the drum as the belt is routed still to the motor pulley when you manually try to turn it.

Another component that should be check is the idler pulley which is actually the belt tensioner (with the diagonally placed spring). You may also want to check the belt guide, some have been known to rub against the belt hard enough to stop it.

The drum on our Neptune Dryer has stopped turning. It still heats up, but the drum just won't turn.

If the heater and blower work then th eprblem is with the drum turning system
This includes the motor ( which we will presume works because the blower does),the belt (Item #25 in the Cylinder, heater and bulhead diagram) and a spring and idler pully (Items 20 and 21 in the Base, Motor, and blower diagram)
Most likely problem is the spring broke releasing tension that halds the belt to the motor pully and drum. Second most likely is the belt has stretched.
You need to open the unit to determine where the problem lies.
Here are diagrams and parts listing for that machine.
Good luck!

My electric dryer makes a loud squeal while drying? what is wrong

Hello

Sounds like the belt is slipping from wear.Remove rear panel of dryer and replace the belt.
Its not very hard to do.

Belt wraps wround the drum and a pully on the motor, there may be an idler pully also.

Check these pullys and motor for free turning while the belt is off.

Drum doesnt turn when turned on, can hear power goes to motor. Hve checked the belt and it is attached and can be maually turned

SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE A PULLY ON THE MOTOR SLIPPING IF YOU CAN HEAR THE MOTOR RUNNING, BUT THE DRUM DOES NOT TURN. IF NOT THE PULLY, THEN THE BELT MAY BE SLIPPING IN THE PULLY, BUT THE PULLY IS TURNING. THEN A NEW BELT IS NEEDED. IN EITHER CASE YOU WILL NEED TO ACCESS THE MOTOR AREA TO SEE WHATS HAPPENING. MOTOR COULD BE NOT RUNNING, EVEN THOUGH YOU HEAR A HUM IN IT. BUT, MOTORS NORMALLY RUN LONGER THEN THE LIFE OF THE DRYER.

How to put belt back on drum on my dryer

You have to take the back off of the dryer and see the motor pully and the idler pully. slip the belt around the drum, around the mototr pully and usind a flat blade putty knife, work the belt over the idler pully so that it puts tension on the belt. you may have to loosen the idler pully housing bolts, but try it first with working it over the idler as that was set for optimum tension.

If you go from the top. The belt goes down the drum, between the drum and idler pulloy, under the idler then pull it over to the top of the motor pully and loop over it. When it comes out from under the motor pully it goes under the drum and over to the other side of the drum, and back up to the top of the drum. I hope this makes since.

KENMORE DRYER MOD# LEQ9858LWO WILL NOT TURN BUT HEATS

If you hear a humming, then it is probably a broken or slipped belt from the motor to the drum. There is usually a pully on the shaft of the motor, a tensioner pully on a spring, and a groove on the back of the drum that the belt rides in. If this belt breaks or comes off track, the motor will still spin but the drum won't.

You will probably need to take the front or back off of the dryer (varies by model) to expose a view of the belt, and once you do this, it will be easier to see if the motor is turning or the belt has broken or slipped.

If the belt has slipped, be sure to inspect it for wear, and replace it if worn. Otherwise, it will slip again and you'll have to repeat the process.
