I need to locate a service manual to remove and replace a plastic fuel tank with a metal one. Also for body/mirror and door replacements. Help--Thanks

The fuel filter will be located above the fuel tank. You will need to remove the front fuel tank strap to change the filter. Make sure you relieve fuel pressure before removing the lines otherwise gas could potentially spray everywhere including all over you! Remove the two lines from the filter (sometimes there is just one) remove the bolt that secures the filter to the tank. Remove the line from the filter to the metal fuel line.

After you install the new one make sure the connection is solid where the plastic line from the filter connects to the metal line. This connection is the one that fails quite often after the filters are replaced!!

the plastic on the base of the mirror pulls off and you will find two screws undo them and thats it no need to take off the door panel inside

The Fuel Filter is in the Fuel Tank, the Filter is considered a "lifetime" filter, that does not need to be replaced... which is not correct.... mine was clogged at 99,500 miles, and stopped my car from running all together.... I would replace the fuel pump and filter at 100K miles or 120K miles when you drop the fuel tank.. the pumps either go at 80-120K or never....

Outside Mirrors REMOVAL & INSTALLATION The mirrors on these models can be removed from the door without disassembling the door liner or other components. Both left and right outside mirrors may be either manual, manual remote (small lever on the inside to adjust the mirror) or electric remote. If the mirror glass is damaged, replacements may be available through your dealer or a reputable glass shop in your area. If the plastic housing is damaged or cracked, the entire unit will need to be replaced. Manual

1. Remove the set screw and the adjustment knob, if equipped.
2. Remove the delta cover; that's the triangular black inner cover. It can be removed with a blunt plastic or wooden tool. Don't use a metal prytool; the plastic will be marred.
3. Fig. 1: Use a tapped ended tool to pry the trim from the mirror
   
   
4. Depending on the style of mirror, there may be concealment plugs or other minor parts under the delta cover — remove them.
5. Support the mirror housing from the outside and remove the three bolts or nuts holding the mirror to the door.
6. Remove the mirror assembly.
7. Installation is the reverse of removal.
8. Power
   1. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds from the time the negative battery was disconnected to start work. CAUTION
      Some models covered by this manual may be equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in Section 6.

10. Depending on the type of door trim, you may need to remove the door inner panel to access the electrical wiring harness for the mirror.

12. If the wiring to the electric mirror was not disconnected previously, detach it now. Some connectors can only be reached after the mirror is free of the door. Remove the mirror assembly.
13. Installation is the reverse of removal. Cycle the mirror several times to make sure that it works properly.

I did the same thing with my car. there is a plastic cover inside the door where the mirror is. Pop off the cap and you can then take off the mirror. ONly problem is you can not change just the mirror you have to replace the body too. At least thats the way it was on my car. Dealer part was $137 at the time and it wont be painted.

actually, both of those solutions are wrong (atleast location wise) from "Guru" and completly wrong from "Wiz". "If" your Explorer is a 4dr model than the fuel filter is located on the passanger side frame rail (between the rail & rear trans. crossmember). 1st thing 1st, you do have to remove the pos. batt. cable, and you also have to dis charge the fuel system (at the fuel rail around the throttle body). its a what i would describe as a "tire style" valve, but metal, bleed it till fuel stops spurtting out ( about a 1/2 oz. or so will spurt out.) Now you can remove the metal heat shield thats in front of it and yes you'll need a "fuel line" removal kit to do this. rent it from a local parts store. Have fun!

I've completed this same prcedure on my 1999 GMC Sonoma recently.

Firstly, did you get the right mirror? You need to make sure that the mirror you got is the same as the one you had. For example, if the old mirror was powered and heated, make sure you have a powered and heated mirror.

Now, on to the repairs. I managed to do it in about 2 hours outside my garage with a socket set and some basic hand tools.

- Open the passenger door and remove the door trim (the large plastic piece on the inside of the door which holds your armrest, handle, window switches and lock switch. Your manual and service manual will not go into much detail here.
- What you need to do is remove the inside door handle first.
- Locate the screw behind the lever and remove it.
- Locate two screws in the door trim (usually under the arm rest) and remove them
- Remove the panel with the switches. A flathead screwdrier was used to pry that piece off.
- Disconnect the connectors for the switches.
- The door trim is held on by plastic reusable rivots. These can break, but one or two broken ones will not hurt. They are removed by lifting the trim up and then pulling it out. Pulling it straight out will damage more than one or two rivots.
- Try lifting the trim up with some good force. This may take a minute. Be sure to have lemonade ready for a break
- Once that trim was off, accept a high five from me as that's the toughest part.
- Now, look at the inside of the door where your mirror is. You'll see 3 rubber bumpers.
- Carefully remove these. DO NO DROP THEM! If you do, you must rip and tear more stuff to get them out of the door.
- Disconnect and wires going to your mirror and set them aside.
- Now, carefully again, remove the bolts holding your mirror on. Maybe get someone to hang on to your mirror as you undo these.
- Once those are off, remove the mirror.

For the installation, I'll just simplify the reverse of the removal intructions

- Put the mirror on and put the bolts in (Don't drop them)
- put the rubber bumpers on. (Don't forget. I did. I had to take the trim off again)
- Re connect wiring harness
- Put trim back on. Remember, push it on, then push down.
- Screw trim on under arm rest
- Reconnect wiring to switches
- Clip the switch panel back in
- Put the screw back in behind the handle
- Test

If this worked, GREAT!

If not, unfourtunatly you will have to contact a body technician as there may be problems beyond your control.

I replaced the passenger side mirror on my 1998 Bonneville.
(Thanks to VWmechanic for his helpful post re a 1997 Bonneville; my '98 was a little different.)
First, remove the door panel, as follows:
1. Remove hex-head screw under inside door handle.
2. Remove 10mm screw located under armrest hand grip (to get at it, pop off the piece that covers the tiny courtesy light)
3. Using a screwdriver, pry off the panel. It's held on by several plastic, pop-off fasteners.
4. Remove the plastic red lock slider under the door handle. It can be pried off the wire slider.
5. Lift up on the door panel to release the top edge. You now have access to the inside of the door.
6. To get at the two bolts holding the mirror to the sheet metal of the fender, remove the plastic shield just under the bolt location.
7. Remove/fasten the mirror bolts with a 10mm. I could reach the front bolt with an 8" socket extension, but had to use a 10mm open wrench on the back bolt.
