Did you try the safe mode in XP?
when you start the pc, start hitting F8 until the pc prompts the safe mode , in the safe mode there are the minimum of drivers available , so you can see what is causing it often an device driver or a graphics card , you have to work around and check what you have recently changed if this doesnt help try installing xp over the existing version , thus repairing bad files.

when this doesn't help there is only one option, format he c:\drive (but make BACKUPS first ..) and start all over again.

Do you allow it to 'Repair' the Windows Install? - If not try that - if still having a boot failure - then you will need an OE Windows disk to fix Windows.

Windows failed to start

A recent hardware or software may be the cause. Maybe after installing windows updates.
Hold the F8 or F12 key when you boot up your PC, you'll be prompted with menu just select the one saying "Last Known Good Configuration".

Toshiba L300D laptop running on vista

not having drivers usual won't affect windows from operating, unless it is a necessary item...it may be conflicting with other hardware or noncompatable with windows version i.e.;many hardwares compatable with XP won't run in Vista...most manufacturers have updated drivers you can download from their sites.1ST you will have to disable the hardware you installed to get windows started...do this from control panel/system/(find item)/disable(might click troubleshoot while you're here). If windows starts, this was your problem child...go to makers website; see if a driver is available;download...go back to system in control panel and enable item....hope it works
