Have a new Acer 20" LCD monitor. Recommended setting is 1680 x 1050, but this is not an option in XP, so everything is a bit streatched. Is there a fix?

You must have a high resolution display card that supports 1680 x 1050 resolution.

The monitor should have some buttons on it to enter the menu system for the monitor. as part of the settings there should be options for vertical/horizontal size and position. You will need to adjust these to bring your borders to the correct position.

I have an error message on my screen which ios moving around. It says - 'not optimum mode. Recommended mode : 1280 x1024 60Hz'.

Sounds like you have an LCD monitor. LCD monitors look best in their native resolution. Yours must be 1280x1024. You need to (assuming this is a Windows PC) right click on the desktop and choose Personalize, Display Settings (Vista) or Properties, Settings (XP or older). Set the slider to 1280x1024. It'll confirm the change and then the message should never reappear.

DVI cable not working

If you still have your old monitor plug it back in for a bit and load the drivers for the new monitor (from the disk which came with the new monitor). Right click on your desktop and choose properties and set your display resolution to something like 1024 x 768. Shut down the pc and connect your new monitor to it with the dvi adapter. If it is recognised ok you can then set the resolution from 1024 x 768 to the recommended amount for your new screen. The refresh rate is also important as some lcd screens only work at a certain level. There should be an auto switch on the monitor and if you press this it sets the display to optimum, - or should do.

Resolution

You could check your DPI setting in the display, being a large monitor your DPI setting shoul be up around the 75 - 85 Hertz.
To access this
Control Panel --> Display --> Settings --> Advanced --> Monitor and then click the drop down box and see what the DPI is set to and keep trying the different options until it is clear.
Hope this helps.
