Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

1 Answer

Playstation 3 Ive heard that the playstation has a problem with "over heating" and that when you buy the unit you have to buy a "cooling fan" too! Have also been advised to take out extended warranty because of the "little problems" the playstation 3 has, because it is so technically advanced. Can you enlighten me as to the validity of the above. Thank you. Best regards Jeanne

Yes they get warm. the manual itself even advises you on how to locate your machine with proper clearance away form anything else. its like 3 inches of space on all sides.
the manual also has proper ambient environment temp specs. if you go outside of any of these specs you can void your warranty. other then that if you do what the manual advises you will be able to claim manufacturer error on any repairs.
Remember the PS3 contains a very powerful proc and video rendering engine both are power hungry and produce alot of heat.
A cooling fan may help the situation but you shouldn't need to go overboard with some PS3 branded device. just do what you thinks best, if you are comfortable then your PS3 might be as well.

Over heating playstation 3

Playstation 3 overheating is often caused by one of the following issues: poor ventilation of the unit, excessive dust build up in the unit, or a problem with the cooling fan itself. Clean the fan out with some compressed air and make sure it is getting proper ventalation

My ps3 wont turn on

If the PLAYSTATION 3 feels extremely hot or the system will power off and the power light will flash, this could be an indicator there is a temperature issue with the PLAYSTATION 3 and it is not able to keep the system cool. Please attempt the following troubleshooting steps.
  • Remove any obstructions from the vents.
  • Allow at least 4 inches of clearance on all sides for the PLAYSTATION 3.
  • Remove the PLAYSTATION 3 from any cabinets so it is out in the open.
  • Shut the PLAYSTATION 3 down completely and let it cool down to room temperature, then try running it again.
  • If the fan cannot be heard before the system shut down, the PLAYSTATION 3 may need to be sent in for service.
  • If there is no airflow from any of the vents, the system may need to be sent in for service.
