It may be broken, but I've found that you can get a repair for a non-appearing pen drive by using the wonderful software called photorec bundled in the testdisk software. (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download)
The middle part is the USB and the important piece. if the outer casing came off generally doesn't mean that it will not work. Finish the work your doing maybe even create a file to save it in the computers memory. most computers have multiple USB ports put in a new one the computer will prompt you to wich USB you want to save on. Or while you have the info from the broken USB open gently slide out the old USB while a new one remains in.
The data is not destroyed, but it will be tricky to fix. I would suggest you find a local computer tech who is really good soldering tiny stuff. Or go to a Radio/TV repair shop. I think it will be possible to re-connect the wires and make it work.
It depends on your skill level as to if it can be fixed or not. The data is most likely still safely stored on the flash chip inside the drive casing. However, the USB connector has been just ripped off. If you have any experience soldering it would be as simple as getting a replacement usb plug from an electronics store or cutting a cable you have and then soldering the USB connector back to the flash drive inside the casing. This is something than can be done at home or possible by a repair shop that does any type of soldering work(tv, radios, ect) Most computer repair shops will look at you silly if you ask them to solder a thumb drive back to life. I would not expect more than to be able to mount your drive and copy the data. Odds are after you cut it out of the casing it will never go back in correctly.
The problem you're having is unfortunately common. There are some brands that tend to hold up better, including a mini hard drive version by IO Magic(bout $30 for 12GB) they tend to have retractable or foldaway usb plugs which makes them less suseptible to that kind of damage.
As for fixing them, it's nearly impossible to repair them permanently but I can usually get them up and running long enough to grab your files and get them to a DVD or new drive.
I just signed up here a couple days ago and am unsure of the rules about offering services but if you're interested get back to me and I'll see what I can do(repairs generally rune $50-$120, depending on type of damage)
Have to be taken to either your local PC repair shop or sent back to the manufacturer. I would send it back to the manufacturer because they are more familiar with your system. There is nothing you can do to fix it has to be fixed on motherboard.
If your computer does not recognize anything when you plug it into the computer, your problem is most likely a broken contact inside the usb drive.
You should attempt to open the drive, and see if one of the four contacts on the inside of hte usb key are no longer making their way to the circuit board, and try to reconnect it.
IF you can push the connectors down with your fingers and make contact temporarily, and the computer recognizes it, try to just hold it there while you copy all your data off. Then throw away the flash drive.
This is actually fairly common, if the laptop still works with the broken USB socket you can take the cheap approach which is just don't use that port. If you need more ports a USB hub is pretty inexpensive.
