Your laptop's LCD is illuminated by cold-cathode bulbs, often times a specific size for fitting purposes within your laptop's screen (as size constraints and cosmetic differences can leave little to no room withing the top lid for standard bulbs).
Replacing the back-light bulbs requires the original parts, or replacement as approved by the manufacturer. The first place I would start would be contacting HP (who now owns compaq) at 1-800-hpinvent and inquiring as to the cost for just a replacement screen for your model. Otherwise, you can order one from eBay or some other similar online resource.
The actual installation is quite simple, but it requires about 15-20 minutes of time, and three or four specific tools.
You have to disassemble the top lcd beveled casing, you have to detatch the lcd from the video flex cable that runs through the hinges of the unit and underneath the keyboard bevel. And re-attatch all said parts when you are complete. Keep track of the screws you remove in order to release the casing. And on the screen, often times those little rubber dots along the LCD screen actually need to be removed to locate several more screws.
That solution is if you purchase the entire LCD replacement contained together, which can be considerably more expensive than just replacing the back light. But finding the compatible parts to replace your LCD's defective ones might be close to impossible.
