This could be one of three issues:
1) Monitor is bad
2) cable is bad
3) video card is bad.
Try to plug the monitor into another computer or laptop and see if your current setup still shows black. If it now works, I'm pretty sure that it's your video card, seeing the other 2 components work fine for another computer. If it still doesn't work, then replace the cable and try again with the other computer. If the new cable doesn't fix the issue, then I think that it's monitor that's simply gone bad.
If it's the video card, you're going to have to open up the PC and replace and reinstall a new one. (do a Google search for help on this, but here's one link: http://www.directron.com/howtovideo.html) The install is easy, but if you've never done it before I'd recommend help from your local computer geek (someone from work?) or a computer place such as Geek Squad (located in Best Buy).
If this has helped, please give me the appropriate thumbs up! Thanks, and good luck!
