When your computer offers to start from either a safe mode environment or from 'last known good configuration' it generally means that the windows registry did not properly close on the prior shut-down. This can sometimes mean that there is a critical component of windows that is not closing properly, or is damaged or missing altogether. It is very common for a system change to occur when you are adding new hardware, or when you have been attacked by a malicious virus.

If the laptop has any important information on it, I would first recommend extracting the hard drive, attaching it to another pc with an enclosure, and backup up any important files. That is of course if you have not already done so.

The easiest method to repair from this condition is to reformat your hard drive and re-install your operating system from recovery media. This will work 90% of the time, the other 10% being the rare occurance of your hard drive actually containing bad sectors on the disk itself. This is sometimes repairable with certain hard drive tools available from each respective hard drive vendor's website.

Hope that helps. If not, you can always take it to a Geeksquad technician and they would be very happy to help you.

Stuck windows startup screen

Please turn off the computer, start hitting F8 at the startup and then choose last known good configuration. If this does not work, choose Safe mode options. If nothing works, please restore it to factory settings by holding down CTRL key and hitting F11 key up and down at the startup.

When starting my laptop it gets to the 'Installing Windows Updates' screen then just reboots. I've tried safe mode and 'last known good configuration but it doesn't work.

On startup (previous to the windows screen loading) press F8, from this list presented use the arrow keys to select "last known good configuration" and hit enter.

You have corrupt or deleted windows files or possibly a hardware error. The first thing is to try a repair using a Windows XP CD that came with your system.
XP REPAIR INSTALL 1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order. 2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below. This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer: To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
  • To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
  • To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup: do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you do not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R". 4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations. 5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. 6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact. 7. You will need to apply Windows updates after this procedure.

Unit wont start, gray screen then goes to a screen with options on how to start unit and then goes blank

Answer:To load the last known good configuration in Windows 2000 / XP reboot the computer and as it's booting booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" as shown below. Use your arrow keys to move to "Last Known Good Configuration" and press your Enter key.
Trouble Getting into Windows 2000 or Advanced Options menu - If after several attempts you are unable to get into Windows 2000 or Windows XP Safe Mode as the computer is booting into Windows turn off your computer. When the computer is turned on the next time Windows should notice that the computer did not successfully boot and give you the Safe Mode screen.
Note: With some computers if you press and hold a key as the computer is booting you will get a stuck key message as the computer is booting. If this occurs instead of pressing and holding the "F8 key" tap the "F8 key" continuously until you get the startup menu.

Windows Advanced Options Menu
Please select an option:
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA mode
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
Debugging Mode
Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices Menu
Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.
As can be seen from the above example, you should be able to highlight and press enter to load the last known good configuration. Once completed the computer should restart and attempt to load into Windows.
Will running the Last Known Good Configuration delete anything?
No, running the last known good configuration will restore your last good system settings and will not delete anything. The only thing you may have to reinstall programs you have recently installed because the configuration for those programs may have been lost.

Laptop restarts over and over

Is it Win XP or Vista? hit F8 and see if you can get into Safe Mode, if you can goto start , run and type msconfig, disable all and reboot.

If you cant get into to safe mode, hit F8 when computer turns on and scroll to Last Known Good Configuration. see if lets you in.
If you are running Win XP and none of that works. You will have to run your XP CD and do an OS repair, just load the XP CD at boot when setup starts hit ( Enter F8 then R) let it do its thing. Hope this helps Good Luck.

After booting process done. Screen goes blank and Keyboard not working only Mouse cursor is dispaly and working on the blank screen in My acer Laptop.

Try booting the system to Safe mode.

To boot to safe mode:

Restart the computer. As soon as the BIOS has finished loading, F8 key on your keyboard. When Windows Options menu appears, scroll to select the Safe mode menu item, and then press Enter.

Select "Last known good configuration" then press Enter.

If that doesn't work reboot again and keep tapping on F8 to Safe Mode and instead of selecting "last known good configuration" select "Repair Your Computer"

Or you can try this:
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";}
  1. Place your Windows XP set up disk in your CD drive.
  2. Turn off your computer and change your BOOT order to boot from CDs first.
  3. Turn your computer back on.
  4. Press any key on your keyboard when it asks you to.
  5. Press enter when you see a blue screen, one of the options should say, "To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.".
  6. Press enter to start the windows set up.
  7. Accept the Licence and Agreement and confirm that the setup is searching for current versions on XP.
  8. Press "R" when the set up has found your current version of XP.
  9. Notice that the Set up is deleting all your windows xp files and replacing them. (This will not cause loss of data)

Windows XP fails to load and Computer will not start up.

Boot from startup floppy disks or CD-ROM, choose repair option during setup, and run Recovery Console. When you are logged on, you can run FIXMBR command to fix master boot record. This should solve your problem.
