You need to disassemble the printer cover, I do not have an exploded view for your specific model, but you should start from the hinges. This job may be tricky, it is not a standard user maintenance operation, I would recommend having it done by a profesional

How to clean glass on samsung clx-3160fn

Ok to clean glass get tough and do not wreck the machine, sounds bad but damage could occure if your not careful but forceful.
1)down load any faxes not printed or sent to your computer
2)turn unit off with power button
3)inside of paper exit opening in the upper left hand side push green slide lever towards the back of the machine,,this locks the scanner carage(you can also see the green lock through the scanner glass to the left of the scanning carage as you move the lock). I did this not to disturbe the scanning carage while cleaning the glass.
4)the lid to the scanning bed has to be removed by lifting the complete tray to it's limit and unplugging the data cable,,it is in the middle between the hinges(pinch the cable connector plug locks on both sides and pull out the connector. To release the rectangular hinges lift and tilt the complete unit further back toward the rear of the printer/fax machine. It should lift out and REMEMBER that rear tilt when replacing the fax/printer feed unit as the hinges don't just slide back in to the respective holes.
5)there are two screws near where the hing holes are on eather side of the scanner cover they must be removed.
6)NOW this is the tricky part with only your hands no tools,,,with a large amout of force lift the back corner of the scanner cover(this does not seem possable but lifting at the side of the machine the cover does have a slight lip to lift with and it makes tearable sounds of distruction BUT IF you lift each side near the rear upward for about 1/2inch at a time(side to side)"2 INCHES ONLY" total the cover will give enough room to CAREFULLY reach your hand under the scanner cover with a damp rag to clean the glass and dry with a lint free rag(micro fiber rags work). I used no cleaners at all but lint free is the ticket. DO REALIZE THE TRAY ONLY LIFTS UP ABOUT 2 INCHES from the rear and it should stay up at the 2 inch hight. The removal of the scanning cover would mean more dissasembly of the unit and I saw no need to go that far.
6)NOW to replace the scanner cover (hopefully you were carefull enough not to crack or break the glass as lifting unevenly or pulling upward more than 2 inches could be the end to your scanner. The trick to get the cover back down with the registration tabs into thier respective holes,,it helps to pull outward on the sides of the plastic body where the tabs have to drop down into,,the large taps at the rear are a little less co-operative but with a bit more force the back body will seperate slightly and the read pins fall into place.
7)put the screws back in, then the scanner cover hinges first and snap the data cable into place,,Don't forget to slide the scanner lock (green tap)towards you to unlock the scanning tray.
Good Luck, it sounds difficult and it might be but it can be done without damage. I'm sure a true service repair man would not like the method but my machine is near it's final useful days.

I have an HP Officejet 6500 wireless printer. If I scan or copy a document through the feeder the scanned or copied document has vertical lines from top to bottom. If I lay the document on the glass and...

Lift the scanner top, then look at the narrow pane of glass. There probably is a spek of dust or ink on it. Clean it with alcohol. I've had to remove the glass, due to the speck being on the undersaide of the glass.

Also, lift the ADF cover and clan the rollers with a damp cloth.

My dell Laser Multi-Function Printer 1815dn has a line going straight down on any paper printed through the feeder

If it is from the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder ), it probably is a speck on the scanner glass. Lift up the top scanner cover and clean the glass esp. the narrow glass on the left side. Also, lift the small ADF cover and clean the rollers with a lint free cloth dampened with a mixture of alcohol and water.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response

Thanks, Joe

Have a black line on all my scanned files, runs the length of the page, about 1 1/2 inches from the left edge.

To determine if the vertical lines appearing on your printed documents are related to a printing or scanning issue, print a test page by pressing MENU, 4 (Printer), 2 (Print Options), 3(Test Print) and COLOR START.
If the vertical lines appear on the Test Print continue to Procedure A:Cleaning the Corona Wires Inside the Drum.
If the vertical lines do NOT appear on the Test Print continue to Procedure B: Cleaning the Scanner Glass.
Procedure A: Cleaning the Corona Wires Inside the Drum:
NOTE: Brother strongly recommends that customers do not use generic drumunits and/or toner cartridges, or refill their Brother toner cartridge. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations. Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brotherlimited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the useof unauthorized third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.
A1. Power off the Brother machine using the power switch located on the right side of the machine.
A2. Press down on the front cover release lever and open the front coverby pulling it towards you.
A3. Hold the green handle of the drum unit (labeled 1). Lift the drum unit up and then pull it out until it stops.
NOTE: If you cannot pull the drum unit out, make sure that the front cover is fully open.
A4. Remove the toner cartridges one at a time, by holding the handle of the cartridge and lifting it up and out of the drum unit.
Note: We recommend you place the toner cartridge(s) on a clean, flat surface with a piece of disposable paper underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.
A5. Lift the white plastic corona wire cover by lifting the tabs locatedon the right and left side of the cover.
A6. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right several times.
Note: Be sure to return the tab to the home position. If you do not, printed pages may have a vertical stripe.
A7. Close the corona wire cover.
A8. Repeat Steps 5 through 7 to clean each of the remaining three coronawires.
A9. Reinstall the toner cartridge(s):
NOTE: Before reinstalling the toner cartridge, shake the toner cartridgeside to side.
Hold the handle of the toner cartridge and slide the toner cartridge into the drum unit. Make sure that you match the toner cartridge color to the same color label on the drum. Fold down the toner cartridge handle once the toner cartridge is in place. Repeat this for all the toner cartridges.
A10. Push the drum unit back into the machine until it clicks into place.
A11. Close the front door and power on the Brother machine.
A12. Print a test page by pressing Menu, 4 (Printer), 2 (Print Options),3(Test Print) and Color Start.
Procedure B: Cleaning the Scanner Glass
B1. For safety reasons, power the Brother machine Off using the power switch located on the right side of the machine.
B2. Lift the Document Cover and clean the following with a lint-free cloth moistened with a non-flammable glass cleaner:
a. Run your fingertip over the scanner glass of the flat bed to check for debris. If you feel debris, clean the entire glass area but concentrating in the area in which you felt the debris. (Caution! Do notpress down on the glass very hard.)
b. Run your fingertip over the scanner glass on the left to check for debris. If you feel debris, clean the entire glass area but concentrating in the area in which you felt the debris.
c. The white plastic pad located on the underside of the Document Cover
d. The white plastic pressure bar located to the left of the white plastic pad.
B3. Close the Document Cover.
B4. Test the machine by making a copy of a blank sheet of paper using the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) and a copy using the Flat Bed.
a. To make a copy using the ADF, place the document face UP in the ADF, press the COPY mode key located below the LCD display and then COLOR START. If the problem continues, repeat Steps 2b and 2d at least 3 additional times.
b. To make a copy using the flat bed, lift the Document Cover of the flat bed, place the document face down on the scanner glass (make sure the ADF is empty) and close the Document Cover. Press the COPY mode key located below the LCD display and then COLOR START. If the problem continues, repeat Steps 2a and 2c at least 3 additional times.

Black line when using feeder. I have cleaned with alcohol the glass, rubbers, everything, as suggested. Just tried scanner, same line appears.

Determine where the line is...right side, middle, left side. Lift the ADF up. If you have to lay the paper down on the glass and match the line to the glass. There has to be a piece of dirt in that area. Sometimes it helps to gently run your finger of the glass(where the line is). Feel for any abnormality. Try a magnifying glass. There is dirt there. That's the only thing that will cause a black line when using the ADF. Check the underneath of the ADF cover for dirt.

When using the ADF for scanning to pdf, it creates black lines vertically down the left side of the document. If I use the flatbed scanner, no lines.

The printer is making a gear clicking sound.

I had exactly the same problem with my OfficeJet 6110 as reported above (i.e. the scan head not knowing where the end-stop is). This is how to fix it (this method worked for me) 1) Lift up the scanner/copier hinged lid. Around the edge of the scan glass are 4 Torx screws. Undo all four screws. 2) Carefully prise the control panel faceplate off. The buttons underneath are on a single panel. Slide this to the left and lift off. 3) Jiggle the lid of the scanner to get it off the main body of the printer. 4) Locate the scan engine motor (top right corner) and remove the two motor retaining screws (one on the left of the motor, the other on the right). 5) Lift out the entire mechanism (rod, drive belt, scan head) and turn over. 6) Thoroughly clean all glass and mirrored areas of the scan head. Also clean the scan lamp on the top of the scan head. Clean the tray inside the scanner (where the scan head travels back and forth). Also clean the inside and outside of the scanner glass pane itself. 7) Refit all parts, using the technique described above, in reverse order. 8) Switch on printer. It should now work OK. Hope this helps, guys.

How do I clean the INSIDE glass/platen?

You mean the inside of the scanner glass? (The platten is a part of the print unit),

You'll have to remove the sides and read cover. Unplug the scanner wires and remove the scanner assembly. Separate the document feeder from the scanner bed. Open the covers of the scanner bed (usually there are screws holding it together). Remove the glass and clean it. Reverse the process to reassemble.

Be careful. Canon multipasses are built a little like a Chinese puzzle box. There are little snaps everywhere as well as screws. Watch out you don't force anything and cause the snaps to break.
