Printer doesnt come out of sleep mode (Brother MFC7420)

Hi there

i recently purchased a brother MFC7420 printer. The printer i connected directly to my PC and is set up perfectly as i can print, scan, fax etc etc. However, the minute i leave the printer idle for while it goes into sleep mode...then when i try and send another print job to doesnt wake up....i have to turn it off and on to get it to come out of sleep mode. Have asked brother ..they said to upgrade the firmware....which i tried to do but it says i have the latest firmware...

please advise...

Mt Brother MFC7420 does not come out of sleep mode. I have followed the instructions in the manual (page2-6) to (attempt #1) to change the time of the sleep mode to 99 minutes (attempt 2) turn off the the sleep mode.

    1. Press Menu/Set 1,6,2,

    2. press Start and Options simultaneously.

    3. Press Stop/Exit

In step 3, after I press STOP/Exit, the printer goes back to sleep mode.

    We're back to sleep.

No when I sent documents while my computer is awake to the MFC-8600 the
THE MFC-8600 is a sleep, it will not print. I have to unplug the
MFC-8600 and then plug it in to get it to print, my computer is awake
all the time, the brother feature won’t allow you to keep it awake. It
only allow to stay awake 99 minutes

I'd be happy to give you the solution to this problem :)

You'll want to go into the menu and choose these options: 1,6, and 2. The final stop should give you the sleep menu.

The printer is setup for a default of 5 minutes. But you can change it from 00 to 99 minutes. To just shut it off, press the Options and Start button simultaneously and that will do the trick.

Here is the link to the manual:

If I wasn't specific enough, the solution is on page 2-6

After a little more digging around, I found a solution. Add the printer as a TCP/IP printer. In Windows 7, this is the "add local printer" option

CISCO WAP200 constantly loses connection

Your printer is probably going into "sleep" mode after "X" minutes, which may be causing the problem. Use the led interface on the printer to keep it out of sleep mode and that may help.

Hi, my printer Brother MFC-9320CW enters in sleep mode every 30minutes. Any cloues how to clear the timing?

try fixing the SLEEP menu.
Follow the steps I found:
Enter Menu and navigate to General Setup. To enter press OK. Use up or down arrow buttons to go to Ecology and again press OK. Enter Sleep Time menu and enter 0 if you don't want your brother to enter sleep mode. Press OK and exit printers menu.

I lost my network fax and scanning when I upgraded to Win 7 as Brother had no support for Win7 and this printer. Very disappointing.

However, I recently downloaded the MFC-8370DN install package from the Brother website and installed it on my Win7 64 bit Asus laptop. The installer couldn't find my MFC8820DN, but I manually entered the IP address ( in my case). The install completed cleanly, after a reboot I can now start Brother Control Centre 3 and scan and fax from my 8820DN over the network. All good, no need to buy a new printer just yet...

Brother HL-2170W laser printer goes into sleep mode quickly. How can I turn off the sleep mode.

I found this from Tony Benjamin
I have tested it on two different Brother Lasers and it worked.

To cancel DEEP SLEEP on Brother Printer
  1. Go to General Setup then OK
  2. Ecology then OK
  3. SLEEP TIME then OK
  4. While sleep time is display push Down Arrow and CANCEL at the same time!
  5. DEEP SLEEP on/off toggle by Arrow keys
  6. OK to SAVE Deep Sleep off.
It is a shame they don't have this in the web interface or manual they sent with the printer.
