You need to go to the manufacturers website to download the drivers that allow the operating system to figure out how to use your sound card.

If you had a dell:
support.dell.com

If you had a gateway
support.gateway.com

hp
www.hp.com

Google the name of your manufacturer and support. So if I had an acer 2120 I would google
www.google.com

Acer Support.

Usually the first link, find drivers and downloads link, pick out your model, and download the file to reinstall the sound packages.

After putting in new hard drive after the old one died i installed windows xp unfortunately ,have lost all sound.please advise.

you can get the driver from the manufacturer website. If the PC is custom build, get the motherboard name and download driver from them. if your board is not integrated (built in on the board) find the name of the card model, googled it and download from the internet

No sound...anyplace from anywhere

What it has done is replace the motherboard sound chip drivers. You may be able to get them back as follows: -
Go 'Start' - 'Control Panel' -'Sound/Audio Devices'
Select 'Hardware' then click on 'Realtek AC 97' when it opens slect the Driver tab and then 'Roll Back Driver'. reboot and you should have your sound back. Do the same sort of thing with anything else that has gone missing using 'Control Panel' - 'System'- ' Device Manager' and sorting anything with a yellow warning triangle next to it

Have problem with windows Xp pro.

You can get the correct drivers from the Gateway website. Use another computer and download all the Windows XP files for that model number from the website. You need your model number of your pc. Get the files for your motherboard, video, sound card, network card, etc. save them to a usb key or a burn them to a cd. Take the usb key/cd to the other system and load the drivers.

This will get your system back up and running in now time.

I hope this helps you.

My Built-in sound card was lost!

Go to START / ALL PROGRAMS / ACCESSORIES / RUN.

In the command window type compmgnt.msc Under

System Tools click DEVICE MANAGER.

In the Device Manager click Sound, video, and game controllers.

Expand the tree by clicking on the (+) plus sign then select the

name of your sound device. Click Driver, then click Update Driver.

If it fails to update go to Windows Update by clicking

START / ALL PROGRAMS / WINDOWS UPDATE

Let it scan your computer and you'll want hardware under

Optional Updates. Your last choice is to go to the homepage

of your sound device's manufacturer.
