You need to go to the manufacturers website to download the drivers that allow the operating system to figure out how to use your sound card.

If you had a dell:
support.dell.com

If you had a gateway
support.gateway.com

hp
www.hp.com

Google the name of your manufacturer and support. So if I had an acer 2120 I would google
www.google.com

Acer Support.

Usually the first link, find drivers and downloads link, pick out your model, and download the file to reinstall the sound packages.

Is it safe to go back to factory settings on my laptop

Absolutely! This is the way the computer came from the factory.

HOWEVER, be aware that;

1) Any programs you have downloaded, or installed, will be GONE.

2) Any documents you have downloaded, or made, will be GONE.

3) Any photos you have on the computer will be GONE.

4) Any videos you have on the computer will be GONE.

The Computer will go back to a time period BEFORE anything was installed, made, or downloaded, by you.

In this case you should copy all of your personal info off to disks, or flash drives, or an external harddrive.

Programs will have to be reinstalled.
You may also loose drivers.

Drivers are small pieces of software that allow the Operating System to communicate with a device.

Windows XP, and Windows 7 are two examples of an O/S.
(Operating System)

If you loose networking (Internet), or audio (Sound), or what have you, it will be because the Drivers are lost.

(They are still there, but Windows has lost the address to them)

If so, post back on here, or post as a new problem, and we''l help you find the drivers you need, and info on how to download, AND install.

For additional questions please post in a Comment.

Perform a System Restore If Necessary:

  • Step 1 - If the sound has been audible from your computer's speakers and is suddenly lost, you may need to perform a System Restore. Click on the " Start" button and then "All Programs."
  • Step 2 - Click on "Accessories," then "System Tools," then "System Restore."
  • Step 3 - Complete the System Restore Wizard. If this doesn't work, read on.

Delete And Reinstall the Original Sound Drivers:

  • Step 1 - Deleting and reinstalling your sound driver may resolve the problem. Your sound driver may have been corrupted or may be missing. The result of this is that the restore utility menu won't be available. For Windows XP, follow these steps.
  • Step 2 - Click on your "Start" button. Click on "Control Panel" and then "System." Next, click on "Hardware," then "Device Manager, then "Sound, Video and Game Controllers."
  • Step 3 - Click on a sound device named in the Device Manager, and then press the Delete key on the keyboard. Click "OK" in the window that appears. Remove all the listed sound devices i this way EXCEPT Audio Codec and Legacy Audio Drivers.

  • Step 4 - Restart your computer. Reinstall the deleted drivers using the Driver and Application Recovery CDs that came with your Windows XP system.
  • Step 5 - Visit your computer manufacturer's official website. Check for any updated sound driver software for your sound card. If any, download them along with the installation instructions.

I have installed xp but i have lost my sound driver & system shows no media device is found.Plz help me.

Now that you installed windows xp try updating it to the most current sofware from microsoft. If that still doesnt you will have to go into your computer system settings and find device drivers manually using the interent to locate those drivers. With so many different varieties of computers and ages of technology that might be your only way of doing it. I had to do it on my dell when i pu xp on it. Hope this helps.

No sounds on my computer

  • Verify that the lack of sound is not due to faulty speaker connections. A simple way to test it is to substitute the speaker connection with headphones and see if you get any sound.
  • Open the volume control window by clicking your "Start" button and then "All Programs." Click "Accessories," then "Entertainment," then "Volume Control." Alternatively, just click on the speaker icon that's in your System Tray.
  • Check the volume and mute settings. If any of the mute check boxes have been checked, uncheck them. If this doesn't work, read on.
