Question about Dell Dimension 8400 PC Desktop
About every 3-4 months my computer crashes and I have to do a total reinstall of window xp pro. It seems to be after a length of time when one of my protections (doesn't matter which one) does an update, I can get the blue screen of death. Or if I turn on my computer in the morning it may go to the blue screen of death.
I have had to do a total reinstall now 5 times in the past 1 1/2 years. My computer is doing it again, so instead of turning it off, I just leave it on and hope that it won't act up for a while. But it can go to the blue screen anytime. It wants to scan disc when I turn it on and when it does this, sometimes it freezes up.
Do you think I have a damaged hard drive and files are writing over a corrupted area? What could have caused this, could it have been a virus or softwares clashing?
Go to the command prompt. click run adn then type cmd and then click ok.
on the command prompt type chkdsk /r /f then press enter, then a small window will pop uo saying that you need to schedule a scan after the computer reboots, just click ok or yes. after that restart the computer. This will check the HDD for bad sector or bad cluster and then fix it, this may take time depending on the problem (if there is). I do not think it is cause of virus for you can use it for over a month, mostly if you are infected your computer will not last long.
