This may be a problem internally, and may need serious repair.

One test is to open the battery door, if it has a switch , it should not start in any way. If the camera does the same with the battery door open then check to see if the you can see the switch.
If this camera has a switch, the pin area on the door could be damaged or broken, or the switch is not working. If that is the case, as I have done on one, is to put something small on the switch and tape it there, to allow the camera to start and run, when the door is closed.

The camera comes on when the powere button is

Usually this is a sign that the battery is weak or not charged enough.
Make sure you have either a new battery or the battery is fully charged, then test the camera again.
This camera takes a Sony NP-BK1 Li-ion rechargeable battery (or compatible).
If the battery is good and is fully charged, then there is a problem in the camera, and needs repair or sell it as parts or as is (if repair cost is too much) on a site such as Ebay.

When I turn my Sony Cybershot dsc-p72 on, i am able to view my pictures, but when i try to take a picture the screen is black and it makes a whirring noise. Then the camera turns off automatically. How can...

Confirm if you're using a fully charged Battery with the Camera. Check if you're able to playback the images normally. Then, try to reset the Camera by either pressing the Reset button when the Camera is in ON condition or by removing the Battery and pressing the Power button for 1 minute and reinsert the Battery. Unfortunately, if the issue persists your Camera requires service.

You can create the service request at the following page: www.eservice.sony.com

My brand new sony cybershot won't take photos - you can turn it on, but the lens just comes out three times and then goes back in the camera. You are then given a notification to turn it back off and then...

Check if you're able access the Menu. If you are able to access the Menu, please select Initialize under Settings and Main Settings 1 Menu and press OK.
If the issue persists, perform the power reset by removing the Battery and pressing the power button continuously for one minute. Then, leave the power button and reinsert the Battery. If the issue still not resolved the Camera may require service.

My sony cybershot dcs-s700, it has new batteries, but the power button flashes green and camera will not stay on, and you are unable to magnify. Whats wrong

Hi!

Remove the Battery from the Camera and clean the battery compartment using a soft cloth. Then, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then, reinsert the Battery pack and turn ON the Camera. Please make sure that the Battery is fully charged. If the issue persists then the issue may be related to mechanical failure and service will be required.

Battery died while lense extended and now will not power up.

Some of these cameras that have a lens that extends use gears to extend the lens. The gears can strip or get clogged with fine debris and jam the lens. Usung good quality rechargable batteries NOT ALKALINE will usualy have the power to drive the lens.

Ask yourself, how many cycles do you have on the pack? could the pack be weak and not power the camera fully?

Have you tried pushing firmly in on the battery while you power it up? If the camera will not power on with the door open, try and fold a small trip of paper and sit it between the battery and the door. This might push in on the battery enough to better the connection and solve the issue.

If the battery is fine then you may have a lens problem. The lenses can be jammed easy, dropped or an impact when extended is all it takes.
