You will need a USB cable similar to this:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=332957

This is a USB A/B type cable where both ends are slightly different from each other. One side is rectangular (the typical USB size), while the other is square. You can purchase this USB cable from just about any electronics store near you (best buy, radio shack, or for the best price checkout Ebay).

If this has answered your question please give me the appropriate thumbs up. Thanks, and good luck!

How to scan with an HP J4580

Do you have the full-feature software installed? What OS is on your computer? Assuming you have the full-feature software installed (installed before connecting the printer to the computer) and a direct USB connection (with a good cable and functioning USB port), you have two choices.

Start the scan from the computer (have the document face down on the glass or face up in the ADF (for models with the document feed) and the all-in-one ready. For this, with Windows, launch the HP Solution Center (Start > All Programs > HP > HP Solution Center), then click either the Scan Photo or Scan Document button in the program. Set the desired scan settings (this should come up if it wasn't turned off) then click Scan.

Alternatively, you can start the scan from the button (it's the one closest to the button with an X (cancel) on the all-in-one and that will launch the HP Solution Center (assuming HP Digital Imaging Monitor is running). The scan menu will also come up on the printer screen with requests for more setting information (destination etc.)

With Win7 and Vista, Paint will acquire scans (Import from Camera or Scanner). Some versions of Vista and most of Win7 also include Windows Fax and Scan which will also handle new scans.

I hope this helps.

Should I be able to scan from the j4580 directly to my computer i am running windows 7

Yes, go to hp/support type in your product info. I believe that isn't a wireless model but you still can connect via usb cord then download the full hp software suite version 13 for your machine. The download takes a little while but includes scanning to your computer printing sd card ect ect.

How to connect and install driver to the printer

The HP 640C will connect to a PC with either a parallel or a USB cable. If you are connecting to a Mac computer, you will connect to your PC with a USB cable. I would recommend the USB cable for either the Mac or a PC as it is a better connection. If you do not have either of those cables you will need to buy one from your local computer accessory store. Turn off your printer and computer. Connect your cable to the printer and computer. Then boot your computer, and once the bootup finishes, turn on the printer. At that point you will have to install the software driver cd that came with the printer. If you do not have the software you can go to the HP website and download the correct drivers for your computer.

Vista Shuts down with hp officejet j4580

Disable all the startup items and your security software and firewall. Then try installing the printer. If you still have the same problem try installing the printer by connecting to a different USB port. You can also uninstall all the USB port from device manager. restart the computer and then install the printer.

Thanks
