Windows 98 does not support Plug n Play Devices. So you have to download appropriate drivers from Microsoft Website. Though Windows 98SE ( Windows 98 Second Edition ) thought to be support USB Mass Storage Drives fairly, these drivers are not pre-installed with OS. You have to download Service packs to install these drivers.
Since Windows 98 have TWO versions, we have to download corresponding service packs .
Hello sir, hi, installing a USB device on windows 98 is kinda hard but possible. here are some things that you should do:
you may need the sierra CD device driver that comes with your wireless card.
next is that your PC should support USB 1.1 or 2.0. If you are using windows 98, make sure that your USB port is working fine, you can insert a flash drive to confirm if your usb port is working.
depending on the setup files they may need you to plug in the device as the setup file loads the driver or later.
run the sierra CD setup file to install your wireless card. (hope win 98 supports this device)
after the setup, plug in your wireless USB device, windows 98 should detect it.
If things didnt work out as listed above, do it setup several times, ............ still no progress call your dealer for proper installation on your PC.
Regarding on your problem, in windows xp and up version of windows operating system, plug and play device is easy and no need to install its drivers manually cause the computer will automatically install its drivers. But in the case of Windows 98 you have to install your USB Driver manually in order to be recognize by the system. So my recommendation please insert the CD driver or load the driver of your USB and run the setup.exe to install the USB Driver.
Another solution is to download and install Microsoft Virtual PC in XP, create a Virtual PC drive, and install Windows 98 onto the Virtual PC drive. This works fine if you want to run Win 9X programs which don't require access to USB ports on your computer. If you need Windows 98 to have full access to all of the computer hardware, then use palaboy's solution.
You have said that d:\ has the xp you can still install windows 98 in c:\ doesnt matter but the file system must be fat32 if you install 98 in c:\ you must manually edit boot.ini in c:\ to get acess to xp of the d:\ iwill tell you how to if you are interested
Windows 98 SE supports USB 2.0. The original Windows 98 (gold) or Windows 98 OEM or Windows 98 Upgrade versions which are not SE will not support USB 2.0. Nor is there any way to get USB 2.0 support for these Windows 98 versions unless you upgrade to Windows 98 SE.
Note that the Windows 98 SE upgrade CD will fail upon completion, leaving the SE Upgrade with a corrupt registry, if you try to run the Windows 98 SE Upgrade CD on a Windows 98 system that has a version of IE installed which is higher than IE 4.
It could be a memory related problem. Try to test your memory module by installing it to a different system that is surely working. If that system restarts, then you must replace the memory module.
