While having morning coffee, I heard the washing mechine turn itself on. I turned it off and it came back on several minutes later. I left it unplugged for a half an hour and it hasn't come back on, but I am concerned that it will when I am not home.

I have heard of several cases where the Kenmore dryer completely shuts off by itself after a few minutes.
Here is a couple of things to check :
switch If the door switch is defective, the dryer won't
work and you need to replace the failed component. The switch is inside
the dryer main housing near the door frame. Sometimes you need to raise
or open the top or front of the dryer to reach the switch. It's a
possibility that the heat would render the contacts defective. You can
put a jumper wire across the switch and see if it helps.
fuse On many dryers, there's a thermal fuse (a
heat-sensitive fuse that turns off the dryer if the dryer overheats)
mounted to the exhaust duct inside the back cover panel. The fuse is
around an inch long. It's usually embedded in black resin and mounted in
a white plastic housing.
It sounds like there's a problem in the motor controller module or the motor itself. Unplug the machine first for at least 30 minutes to eliminate the possibility of an electronic glitch. If unplugging it doesn't address the issue, disconnect power then raise the console to access the motor controller module. Disconnect the pump and motor harness including the rotor position sensor harness from the motor controller module.
Reconnect power then start the machine. The problem is either of the disconnected parts if the machine doesn't shut itself off. Reconnect them one at a time then restart the machine and you should be able to find which one is causing the machine to shut itself off.
The problem is in the motor controller module if the machine still shuts itself off with the pump/motor and rotor position sensor harnesses. Replacing the module is the only viable solution.
Indicate the exact model number of the machine should you need further assistance. You don't have to rate this solution in order to reply or post additional information.
