The system's laser could have gone bad. I have heard of this happening. I have never serviced a PS3, or even played one, but the same thing happened to my PS2, and after I replaced the laser disc reader, it worked like new.

the disc/blu-ray player sensor is broke get contacts from playstation.com and call them about fixing it (you have to have your warranty)

Wont play games or movies

Its a problem for the PS3 known as the SoD. It means you cant read any discs now. You can play demos and stuff stored on ur PS3 thpugh. If its under warranty, sony WILL fix it for ya.
If not, be ready to shell out 125$

If your PS3 is not reading disc, but can play demos, music, etc. You need to replace your PS3's lens.
